Medical Lab Scientist in the Stem Cell Laboratory at Duke University Hospital. Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., with Saturday coverage once every two months to cover time off requests.

This position is eligible for a second-shift differential and a $7,500 commitment bonus (for a 1-year commitment).

General Description:

Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in a high complexity laboratory

to obtain data for use in the treatment of disease in the field of transplant medicine.

Job Duties:

Flow Cytometry Testing

CD 3, 4, 34, and immune reconstitution panels

Quality control and instrument maintenance

Review of results before they are reported to the clinical team,

Tissue Culture Testing

Plating of clinical samples for colony forming units (CFUs)

Manual plating of CFU assay, plating CFU assays to be run on the STEMVision instrument

Manual reading of CFU plates

Reading of CFU plates using the STEMVision instrument

Hematology testing

Reading of manual differentials

Performing cell counts on Sysmex XN-450 instrument

Staining of slide (for manual differentials)

All Other Related Duties

Technical Duties Performed:

1. QC on flow cytometers (BD FACSCanto II and BD FACSLyric)

2. Manual Differentials

3. Plating of clinical colony forming units (CFU) samples

4. Manual reading of clinical CFU plates

5. Start-up and use of the StemVISION (SV) instrument

6. Plating of SV fresh samples

7. Testing of CAP proficiency samples

STEM CELL LABORATORY

1. Monthly QC sheet review

2. Review of calculations before results are reported to clinical team

1. Biological safety cabinet (BSC)

2. 37o water bath

3. Sysmex XN-450 hematology analyzer

4. 1-10oC refrigerator

5. -20oC freezer

6. -80oC freezer

7. Light microscope

8. Mini-vortex

9. Pipettes

10. BD FACS Canto II flow cytometry instrument

11. BD FACS Lyric flow cytometry instrument

12. StemVISION instrument

13. Wescor slide stainer

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology required. Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
