Overview Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Research Associate II to preform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. May exercise technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. This position will be in support of the Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i) of Uniformed Services University (USU) Department of Surgery. The Research Associate II will be dual-located at the US Army Institute for Surgical Research and Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in the San Antonio, TX area. This position will support SC2i projects related to wound care and treatment. Specifically, the projects are focused on predicting onset of sepsis after a burn injury and on predicting optimal time for wound closure. SC2i is a Uniformed Services University center that leverages legacy information from service members, and critically ill civilian and military patients to develop biomarker-driven clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) with the goal of improving patient clinical outcomes and reducing costs across the injury/disease cycle. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. Responsibilities Oversees the operations of the SC2i Laboratory, ensuring compliance with GCLP standards, including maintenance of accreditation and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Performs complex laboratory procedures, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches. Analyzes and prepares reagent and/or sample product documentation. Organizes and procures needed reagents, performs experiments, analyzes data, and documents results. Performs routine data analysis and basic interpretation, and verifies and corrects data entry. Trains junior laboratory staff in laboratory techniques and processes, as needed. Conducts research in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation. Maintains records and documentation regarding assigned research and appropriate documentation to support testing procedures including database management, notebooks, forms, and log books. Order and restock laboratory supplies and maintain / update electronic or physical inventories. Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor on other SC2i studies. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role. Qualifications Education and Experience Master's Degree required. Minimum of 3-5 years' experience required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and complex laboratory procedures, preferred molecular biology and/or immunology experience. Preferred skill set includes bioprocessing of various clinical sample types such as serum, wound effluent, and tissue. Ability to meet deadlines of projects. Good communication, analytical skills, and ability to multi task. Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills. Proficiency and working knowledge of molecular, cell biology, and immunological techniques. Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 public trust investigation. Physical Capabilities Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs. Work Environment This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting. Compensation The annual salary range for this position is $57,650-$75,000.
