Job Summary
Blood Bank Technologist Job SummaryOverview
In a highly regulated environment (FDA, AABB, TJC, DPH, CMS, NRC), the Blood Bank Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring patients receive the necessary blood products. This position involves performing testing, processing blood products, and maintaining compliance with the departments Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The technologist works both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced laboratory setting while also assisting in the training of new employees and students.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Bank Operations
Process specimens, fill orders, issue blood products, and minimize wastage.
Handle phone inquiries and collaborate with other departments.
Recognize and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
Laboratory Testing & Quality Control
Perform critical tests, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin tests, and transfusion reaction investigations.
Maintain an efficient workflow, integrating STAT requests with routine testing.
Operate and troubleshoot Blood Bank instrumentation, conduct quality control (QC), and maintain equipment.
Blood Component Processing
Comply with cGMPs for manufacturing and modifying blood components.
Ensure accurate inventory management of blood products, tissue, and supplies.
Reference Lab & Problem Resolution
Perform advanced serological procedures and resolve basic serological discrepancies.
Maintain accurate documentation and ensure timely task completion.
Training & Education
Assist in training new employees, students, and medical staff.
Stay current with required competencies and continuing education.
Professionalism & Collaboration
Foster effective communication and teamwork with colleagues and hospital staff.
Uphold departmental standards for professionalism and hospital policies.
Safety & Compliance
Adhere to hospital and regulatory safety protocols, including OSHA regulations, hazardous waste management, and radiation safety.
Additional Duties
Participate in department improvement projects.
Perform other duties as assigned to support Blood Bank operations.
This role is essential in ensuring safe and effective transfusion services while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and laboratory excellence.
Qualifications
1. Requires Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related science. 2. MT(ASCP), BB(ASCP) or equivalent certification or eligible.
3. Successful completion of the hospitals Trustworthiness and Reliability assessment. Unescorted access to the Blood Bank Irradiators is a requirement of the position. S
