The Center for Brain Immunology and Glia and the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia are seeking a Data Scientist to support ongoing research efforts. The Data Scientist will work with researchers to develop pipelines for the analysis of large data sets from a variety of omics data sets, including bulk RNA sequencing, single cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and proteomics. The Data Scientist will work with a variety of groups at UVA with a focus on neuroimmunology and glia research. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other data scientists at UVA including the School of Data Science and others. While this position will allow for growth and expansion of the Data Scientist's expertise, we prefer a minimum of three years of documented experience in biomedical data analysis (coursework, degree program, or publications). The position requires in-person meetings with researchers but can be up to 80% remote.

Collaborate closely with scientists to understand research questions of interest and develop actionable and achievable data science projects.

Design, develop and implement analysis pipelines, statistical models, machine learning algorithms and data mining techniques where each is appropriate to analyze large and complex datasets

Develop and maintain data processing pipelines for efficient data processing, storage and analysis

Work creatively with researchers to optimize data visualization to enhance data understanding

Carry out exploratory data analyses from preliminary and publicly available data to aid researchers in solidifying and supporting hypotheses

Evaluate model and algorithm performance and work to improve their robustness, accuracy and cost-effective alternatives

Clean and consolidate data from a range of in-house and publicly available sources

Remain up to date on the current state and recent advancements in data science and currently available resources that may aid projects

Contribute to establishing best practices for common data analyses used by researchers and be open to educating researchers including Ph.D. students to improve their data analysis skills and expedite data analyses

Document all methodologies and code clearly and work with researchers to make these publicly available as outlined in NIH requirements and aid in manuscript preparation

Work with researchers to identify the most appropriate data storage solutions from those available at UVA

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Master's Degree

Experience: Three years of relevant experience.

Licensure: None

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A MS or PhD in a related biomedical field (Neuroscience, Immunology, Biology, etc.)

Experience: A minimum of three years of documented experience in biomedical data analysis (coursework, degree program, or publications).

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This is a hybrid position, located in Charlottesville.

The position will remain open until filled with an initial review date of July 7, 2025. This is an Exempt level, benefitted position.
