Associate Scientist (Strain Facility, Cell Bank & GxP Transfer) at Lumen Bioscience

Lumen Bioscience is seeking a dedicated Associate Scientist to join our collaborative team, focusing on the development, standardization, and transfer of spirulina cell banks into GxP compliance. In this critical role, you will work closely with our R&D, Production, and Quality Control teams to streamline and standardize processes involved in generating, maintaining, and utilizing biologics-expressing spirulina strains. Role Description:

  • Cell Bank Development: Spearhead efforts to standardize the generation, maintenance, growth, and expression of spirulina cell bank strains and ensure compliance with Good Practices (GxP).
  • Molecular and Microbiology Protocols: Regularly perform molecular biology and microbiology tasks including PCR, plasmid purification, sterile bacterial strain handling, and media preparation.
  • Culture Maintenance: Cultivate and maintain cyanobacteria cell cultures meticulously, adhering strictly to aseptic techniques.
  • GxP Documentation: Develop, write, edit, and manage GxP compliant documentation and protocols for laboratory operations.
  • Team Collaboration: Work independently and cross-functionally with the R&D, Production, and Quality Control teams, assisting in training new staff and developing training materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement robust protocols for spirulina cell bank creation and maintenance under GxP standards.
  • Regularly perform and document molecular biology and microbiology experiments.
  • Manage the growth, expression, and freezing of spirulina cell stocks.
  • Prepare, edit, and maintain GxP-compliant records and SOPs.
  • Engage actively in laboratory maintenance and operational efficiency.
  • Provide training assistance and materials for new laboratory staff.
  • Regularly present project updates and detailed reports in team and company-wide meetings.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Educational Background:

  • BA/BS degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Biotechnology, or related scientific field.

  • Minimum of 5 years post-graduation laboratory experience.

  • Professional Experience:

  • Strongly preferred experience in GxP environments and/or drug development.

  • Proven expertise with microbiology (bacterial culturing, media preparation) and molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE).

  • Proficiency and mastery of aseptic techniques, including operations within laminar flow hoods.

  • Skills and Attributes:

  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to independently manage experiments and collaborate effectively across teams.

  • Strong initiative, adaptability, and a proactive approach in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to quality, timely results, and adherence to laboratory safety and best practices.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to maintain comprehensive, accurate laboratory records.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods (2 or more hours).
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 20 kg.
