The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action; OR incumbents serve as the technical scientific expert for a bureau within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
The Environment Scientist 4 will serve as Technical Scientific Expert in NDEP's Bureau of Federal Facilities and is located in Las Vegas. The incumbent will support long-range programmatic planning for the safe disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). They will assist with classifying and forecasting LLRW from each of the 25 Dept. of Energy waste generators that ship LLRW to the NNSS for disposal; conducting and overseeing enhanced waste verification at DOE sites throughout the USA; reviewing waste stream profiles; tracking waste streams, and engaging with stakeholders stakeholders. The candidate must apply for a receive Q security clearance to review classified waste streams and travel throughout the DOE complex to review waste streams that may be destined for the NNSS. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and four years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and six years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
