Senior Scientist, Translational Pathology - Immunohistochemistry

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join Translational Pathology team at Bristol Myers Squibb (Brisbane, CA). The successful senior scientist will work with colleagues throughout BMS to establish assays using immunohistochemistry, multiplex staining/imaging, in situ nucleic acid hybridization, and digital pathology. The senior scientist will be directly responsible for the design, development, execution, and analysis of discovery and translational tissue-based biomarker assays to interrogate target prevalence, target engagement, mechanisms of action, pharmacodynamics, and prediction of treatment response. The position entails working on multiple projects independently and in multi-disciplinary teams consisting of pathologists, IHC lab scientists, biologists, and in vivo pharmacologists, etc. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in IHC assay development and validation, including antibody screening, chromogenic and multiplexed immunofluorescence assays, digital pathology/image analysis, and novel tissue-based technologies such as PhenoCycler Fusion and Xenium, with a working knowledge of histology/morphology/pathology and data interpretation. The senior scientist will have accountability for assays transferred to partner labs and contract research organizations. The senior scientist will also be responsible for working independently and with digital pathology colleagues to build and assess image analysis algorithms and workflows. A scientific background in cancer research/cancer immunology is highly desirable. He/she also has excellent verbal and written communication skills, can present scientific results to multidisciplinary teams, has the ability to work flexibly in a matrixed, fast paced environment as a team player, with solid problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead IHC projects to meet project requirements in a timely manner
  • Responsible for all aspects of assay development and staining including intake, research, planning, development, coordination, execution, risk communication/management, updates and transfer of assays including (but not limited to) chromogenic immunohistochemistry (IHC), in-situ nucleic acid hybridization, multiplexed immunofluorescence (mIF) and digital pathology
  • Design, organization, and execution of assay development workflow strategies (feasibility, verification, and validation), with appropriate knowledge and use of controls and test tissues
  • Review and score project slides with the engagement of pathologist oversight and review as needed
  • Perform image analysis by using Halo software to provide digital quantitative data
  • Generate, analyze, summarize, report and interpret IHC data
  • Work with In vivo pharmacology teams to advise on preclinical models and study design parameters
  • Effectively collaborate in a highly matrixed organization
  • Train team members in established methodologies, troubleshoot, and provide guidance to internal collaborators
  • Work flexibly in a fast-paced industrial research environment as a team player
  • Maintain workplace and lab compliant processes, documentation, and communication
  • This is a lab-based position requiring on-site work >80% of the time (averaged across 2 weeks)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
    • 8+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Masters Degree
    • 6+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
    • 3+ of academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in biological sciences or related biomedical fields with over 3 years of relevant experience in industry or academic pathology lab setting
  • Prior experience in oncology/immuno-oncology and biotech/biopharmaceutical industry is highly preferred
  • Thorough knowledge and extensive hands-on experience in IHC antibody selection, screening, validation, IHC assay development, multiplexed immunofluorescent, in situ hybridization/RNAscope staining are required
  • Experience in Leica, Ventana, Dako, Phenocycler and Xenium platforms is preferred
  • Knowledge of histology and pathology is required. Should be comfortable working with pathologists in designing and interpreting pathobiology research
  • Experience with digital scanning, image management systems (IMS), and digital image analysis platforms (HALO, Visiopharm) for H&E, immunohistochemical and multiplexed fluorescence images is required
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in written and verbal English
  • Collaborative/team spirit and ability to thrive in a matrixed environment, familiarity with a fast-paced work environment
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills and technologies
  • For this position, the starting compensation for this job is a range from $142,000-$165,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
