Job Summary

Medical Laboratory Scientist, Lead is responsible for testing patient specimens, ensuring accuracy of test, and communicating results to providers.

Reports to: Supervisor, Medical Laboratory

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:

Prepare specimens for testing
Test patient specimens, establishing and ensuring acceptable levels of QC are maintained
Responsible for ensuring requirements of the CAP, AABB, DNV, and FDA (as applicable to
section/shift) are followed and in compliance
Ensure equipment is operational by performing equipment maintenance, calibrating, and
troubleshooting
Collaborate, as needed, with providers in diagnosing and monitoring patient testing and results
Examine and analyze blood, bodily fluids, tissues, and cells
Assist in performing CAP and AABB inspections
Assist Lab Supervisor with scheduling, Kronos maintenance, staff huddles, team member check
ins and summary reports to the leadership team
Assist with training to include oversight and preparation of training schedule for new employees
and students
Evaluate competency of all testing personnel (must meet CLIA requirements)
Compile and report required information to city/state/federal agencies within the allotted
timeframe
Maintain policies and procedures and ensure these are reviewed by the medical director or
designee and staff, revisions and new procedures are written promptly and accurately according
to regulatory standards.
Serve as backup for the laboratory supervisor in their absence
All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or Clinical Lab Science
+ 4 years clinical laboratory experience, in a hospital setting preferred
+ 2 years of demonstrated leadership (leading people or practices)

Licensures/Certifications/Registrations

MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MLT (ASCP) or equivalent required

Skills and Abilities

Understands and can articulate correct procedures to accurately identify patients, label
specimens, and verify there is adequate sampling for the testing ordered
Demonstrates extensive knowledge in the care and use of laboratory instrumentation,
procedures, and reporting documentation of results
Must be able to effectively interact with and lead people from all backgrounds
Clear communicator, both verbally and in writing; Must be able to read, write, and speak English.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position has much interaction with nursing staff and other hospital departments

Physical Capabilities

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist can expect to stand for long periods of time and walk
frequently. This position also requires frequent stooping, sitting, reaching, bending and kneeling. The
incumbent may also be required to carry items over 50 pounds. Near visual and color acuity is required.

Environmental/Working Conditions

This position is subject to inside environmental changes that may include constant change in
temperatures and minimal exposure to cleaning, staining, and testing chemicals.
