Overview

The future of multi-omic sequencing-the integration of multiple layers of omics data such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, and more-promises to revolutionize biomedical research, diagnostics, and personalized medicine. Millions of multi-omic datasets are expected to be generated over the next decade, driven by steady innovations in sequencing technologies pioneered by Illumina. The enormous quantities of multi-omic data being generated by Illumina in collaboration with our partners worldwide represents a major opportunity to develop novel approaches to interpret and integrate complex datasets and apply it towards improving human health.

Position Summary

Illumina is hiring a Senior Scientist to work in our Strategic Clinical Research group within the Global Medical Affairs team. This role will focus on sample preparation, library preparation, next generation sequencing, and analysis to develop and support transfer of multi-omic solutions for clinical and translational applications. Key objectives include prototyping new protocols and generating feasibility data using multi-omics approaches to aid in the identification of genetic features implicated in disease. Methods will be published in peer-reviewed journals and used to develop software products to aid in multi-omic interpretation. In addition to strong cell biology, molecular biology, and data analysis skills, this position will require a high degree of initiative, autonomy, and scientific collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Independently designs and performs experiments, interprets their own and others' results, considers how they may impact own progress and project deliverables and identifies alternate strategies and may submit invention disclosures with others
  • Owns and plans projects along with schedule and budget within technical area of expertise and may direct other scientists' and engineers' experiments (includes planning and design as appropriate)
  • Sets standards and processes for themselves and others in experimental design, data collection and analysis and defines technical requirements for products or small projects (considering robustness, scalability, and cost)
  • Identifies risks and provides recommendations for risk mitigation in area of responsibility and at critical interfaces to other teams
  • Provides technical leadership in the lab and mentors supporting scientists, engineers and junior personnel on technical skills in one's area of expertise

Requirements

  • Demonstrate advanced theoretical understanding of scientific principles within own discipline or advanced knowledge within own discipline and department; mastering most relevant areas
  • Possess breadth of expertise across multiple projects or multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to handle new tasks or operations without guidance and then train others (e.g., advanced instrumentation, advanced software, new experimental methods)
  • Able to set technical evaluation acceptance criteria (bake-offs, new projects, collaborations, etc.)
  • Ability to influence decisions and involve relevant stakeholders on projects
  • Productive and effective written and verbal communication of observations and technical findings and progress required

Education

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience

The estimated base salary range for the Sr Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $111,000 - $166,600. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
