We are searching for the best talent for a Senior Scientist, Automation to be located in Malvern, PA.

Purpose: The role of Senior Scientist Automation (Orchestration) in the BioTD AD Automation organization will provide technical expertise and leadership in automation software, automated storage, and system programming to efficiently drive integration of assay biology and chemistry with laboratory automation platforms and integrated systems within regulated and non-regulated laboratory environments. Support for viral, cell, and gene therapies; utilizing analytical technologies such as, but not limited to: cell-based bioassays, flow cytometry, immunoassays, qPCR, capillary electrophoresis, chromatography and peptide mapping. Collaborate with assay development SMEs and end-users to drive sample throughput and/or reduce hands-on time, time-to-result, repetitive strain, and assay variability by building and supporting automated storage and work-cell end-to-end assay solutions. Participate in a dynamic environment that values innovation, leadership, customer focus, integrity, and scientific excellence.

You will be responsible for:

  • Support BioTD-AD- Automation Organization
  • Work in a team environment as well as contributing individually to meet project timeline and objectives
  • Contribute to the automation team by providing technical expertise in automation software, automated storage and system programming to efficiently drive integration of assay biology and chemistry with laboratory automation platforms or integrated systems within regulated and non-regulated laboratory environments.
  • Collaborate with Analytical Development and QC Scientists to develop automated assay orchestration programs on various laboratory automation/integrated systems.
  • Collaborate with automation team members to maintain and connect integrated systems.
  • Provide programing knowledge for the editing of existing and creation of new orchestration methods and to aid in troubleshooting scripts.
  • Engage in creating solutions for technical issues or projects in support of R&D requirements.
  • Troubleshooting automation issues and technically supporting Process Analytical Sciences.
  • Support URS, FAT, SAT and other relevant documentation.
  • Ensure data integrity through the accurate and timely data capture and entry into appropriate systems.
  • Contributes to the design of lead biologic candidates and works to implement next generation targeting technologies for a variety of Biotherapeutic modalities.

Analyzes new and emerging targeting technologies to enhance process quality of Biotherapeutics and finds uses with existing workflows.

  • Interacts with internal and external colleagues for a specified project (CMC teams).

Apply technical expertise to solve less complex technical problems and business processes and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems fail to meet acceptable performance specifications.

  • Coaches more junior colleagues in techniques, processes and responsibilities.

Understands and applies Johnson & Johnson's Credo and Leadership Imperatives in day-to-day interactions with team.

  • Occasionally travel to internal J&J sites for automation support activities

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Minimum of a BS in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or other relative scientific field with at least 6-8 years of industry experience
  • MS in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or other relative scientific field with at least 5 years of industry experience (relevant academic experience also considered) (preferred)
  • PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or other relative scientific field with at least 3 years of relevant industry experience (academic experience post-graduate also considered) (highly preferred)

Experience/Skills:

  • Hands on experience leading implementation of automated laboratory instrument configuration and programming. Integration of various peripherals from third party suppliers is desirable.
  • Proficient in programming, operating, and troubleshooting automated platforms or integrated systems, such as Biosero, Azenta, Hamilton, Agilent, Thermo Scientific, Tecan or HighRes Biosolutions, etc.
  • Experience integrating lab automation solutions with electronic data systems (e.g. LIMS, Electronic Lab Notebook)
  • Manage project timelines across vendors.
  • Experience transferring chemical or biological processes from bench techniques to automated systems.
  • Ability to identify/understand complex customer needs and help design solutions for laboratory and informatics workflows.
  • Experience leading evaluation and implementation of new and novel technologies.
  • Experience with various programming languages, such as C#, Python, Visual Basic, or Java etc.
  • Experience developing instrument drivers and working with instrument APIs.
  • Experience with analytical method development is desirable.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and oral), with the ability to liaise with scientists, vendors, and external collaborators.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a matrix environment.
