Laboratory Technician Senior (Chemistry)

Supports day-to-day instructional laboratory operations by preparing, maintaining, and resetting lab environments for courses in chemistry, physics, engineering, geology, and astronomy. Assists in delivering instructional activities by staging equipment, setting up experiments, and ensuring the availability and safe handling of supplies, chemicals, and instructional materials. Collaborates with faculty and staff to meet course needs, monitors inventory, and tracks usage of consumable materials to support efficient lab operation. Provides guidance to students during lab sessions as needed and maintains clean, safe, and organized lab spaces. Works independently within established protocols to ensure labs are ready and functional for instruction.

Essential Functions

40% Prepares, sets up, and breaks down instructional laboratories Independently prepares materials, equipment, and lab spaces for daily instruction in chemistry, physics, geology, engineering, and astronomy. Assembles and stages apparatus, calibrates instruments, and ensures all required supplies are in place for scheduled experiments. Follows lab-specific safety protocols and institutional guidelines to ensure a safe and efficient environment. Cleans, resets, and stores equipment and materials after lab sessions, disposing of waste in compliance with safety regulations.

20% Coordinates with instructors and staff for upcoming labs Collaborates closely with faculty and instructional support staff to confirm lab needs and ensure all required materials and equipment are available and in working order. Reviews upcoming course syllabi and lab manuals to verify supply lists, identify missing or expired chemicals, and initiate procurement requests. Maintains cleanliness, orderliness, and readiness of shared lab spaces.

20% Monitors usage and collects data on laboratory supplies and consumables Tracks ongoing consumption of chemicals, materials, and equipment across multiple courses and disciplines. Maintains detailed records of inventory levels, usage trends, and reorder points to support timely purchasing. Assists in compiling usage and cost data for budget planning and resource allocation. Identifies opportunities for waste reduction and operational efficiency.

10% Provides student and instructional support in laboratory environments Provides guidance to students on proper laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and correct use of equipment during scheduled labs. Supports faculty during instruction and demonstrations. Troubleshoots basic equipment issues and ensures students have necessary materials.

10% Performs other duties as assigned Assists with laboratory improvements, safety inspections, special projects, and annual inventory activities. Participates in maintaining compliance with institutional and regulatory standards for laboratory safety and chemical hygiene.
