Postdoctoral Research Scientist

  • SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University
  • Brooklyn, New York
  • Full Time

Two postdoctoral research positions are available in the laboratory of Tatyana Pestova and Christopher Hellen at the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, NY. Our NIH-funded research uses state-of-art biochemical and molecular biology approaches to characterize molecular mechanisms of (1) canonical and non-canonical modes of translation initiation in mammals, including IRES-mediated initiation, (2) physiologically important specific cases of translational regulation, (3) translation elongation, termination and ribosome recycling, and (4) events downstream of termination, with a major focus on quality control processes, including mRNA surveillance and ribosome-associated quality control.

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/Molecular Biochemistry, and practical experience in RNA and/or protein biochemistry, including the expression and purification of native/recombinant proteins and the functional analysis of proteins and RNA-protein complexes. Experience in investigating aspects of eukaryotic translation and associated quality control processes will be highly appreciated. Our research involves active collaborations with leading cryoEM laboratories, and experience in structural biology would therefore be helpful. Candidates should be highly motivated, be able to work independently and show excellent critical thinking, scholarly ability and communication skills.

These positions carry a salary of $62,000 - $72,000 (depending on experience) plus benefits. Review of applications will begin immediately. To apply, please send a cover letter discussing your interest in a position and mentioning the expected availability date, your CV (with a summary of research experience, including techniques and methods used, and a list of publications) and contact information for three references to:
