Physics Laboratory Technician

Southeast Missouri State University is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time staff position to primarily oversee the laboratory equipment and associated lab facilities and provide training on this equipment.

Primary Responsibilities

Oversee and maintain the undergraduate physics laboratory stockroom, ensuring all equipment is functional, tested regularly, and readily available.

In collaboration with faculty lab coordinators, prepare laboratory spaces on a weekly basis to support a range of undergraduate physics classes.

Manage and monitor laboratory supplies, maintaining appropriate stock levels and ensuring proper storage.

Maintain and repair departmental equipment, tools, and instruments; coordinate with external vendors for complex repairs or servicing needs.

Collaborate with faculty to monitor and maintain adequate levels of liquid nitrogen for the department's 300 MHz NMR instrument and assist with liquid helium fills as required.

Maintain comprehensive records of laboratory equipment and instruments, including maintenance schedules, safety documentation, and operation manuals.

Support the procurement and installation of new laboratory equipment, providing technical recommendations aligned with departmental needs.

Assist the department chair in maintaining and updating the departmental inventory.

Lead tours and equipment demonstrations for students, faculty, and visiting guests.

Participate in additional departmental support activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, science education, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government-certified university.

Relevant laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to supervise laboratory spaces and equipment, including setup, takedown, maintenance, repair, and implementation of new equipment. The role requires the ability to lift, move, or position equipment as needed.

Proven ability to work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students in a collegial academic environment.
