This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. This Chemist I is to conduct analyses in the Microbiology and Inorganic Chemistry Branchs Asheville Regional Office (ARO) satellite laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform quantitative analysis of environmental water samples for the parameters with shorter hold times.
  • Routine analyses of samples for Alkalinity, BOD5 (5-day biological oxygen demand), fecal coliform bacteria, total coliform bacteria, E. coli, turbidity, residue series, and total dissolved solids.
  • Review and interpret data to ensure that all quality controls are correct, quantifies results, validates that the results are reasonable, and prepares a final report.
  • Prepare standards and reagents for the various analytical procedures, calibrates instruments and verifies analytical accuracy with quality control standards.
  • Accept samples daily and signs chain-of-custody forms, assigns a laboratory number and maintains records of samples receipt.
  • Verify proper preservation and the requested analyses in the laboratory information system (LIMS).
  • Assist the Chemist II in maintaining and ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory inventories, and handling logistical considerations and negotiations with the Regional Office administrative staff, as appropriate.

The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolinas drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. Bachelors degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
