The Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (CMS) conducts a wide range of standardized and highly specialized microbiological analyses. They ensure the accuracy, reliability, and timely delivery of patient test results across all phases-pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical-which are critical for patient diagnosis, management, and treatment. Additionally, the Scientist supports effective communication by skillfully using computer and phone systems, fostering strong customer relationships, and consistently demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and respect toward all patients and colleagues.

  • The Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (CMS) is responsible for performing precise laboratory testing, implementing quality control measures, and ensuring the accurate and timely distribution of test results within the microbiology department. This role focuses on the identification of microorganisms and their clinical significance, rather than conducting a broad range of tests. The CMS strictly adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, meticulously documenting all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, procedural adjustments, and maintenance performed to maintain the highest standards.
  • Actively engages in continuous process improvement initiatives within the microbiology department to enhance workflow efficiency and test accuracy. Strictly adheres to turnaround time (TAT) guidelines for both STAT and routine microbiological tests to support timely patient diagnosis and treatment. Ensures full compliance with infection control protocols specific to microbiology, HIPAA regulations, and all other relevant regulatory standards to maintain a safe and confidential laboratory environment.
  • Empathizes with patient and patient support systems, expresses compassion and understanding for the situation and demonstrates care, which is appropriate for the age, and cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background. Engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out interactions with the patient, families, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots issues that could negatively impact test accuracy or the timely reporting of results, taking corrective action or promptly notifying the Director, Manager, or Supervisor as needed. This includes recognizing atypical microbial growth or contamination and swiftly collaborating with appropriate personnel to resolve these concerns. Maintains thorough documentation of all corrective actions taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance standards, ensuring traceability and quality assurance.
  • Adheres strictly to the microbiology laboratory's protocols for the safe handling, storage, and proper disposal of specimens, reagents, and biohazardous waste to maintain a safe working environment and prevent contamination. Accurately performs microbiological tests, ensures precise reporting, and maintains comprehensive records of patient test results to support reliable diagnosis and treatment. Keeps detailed documentation demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are processed and analyzed with the same rigor and procedures as patient specimens to ensure consistent quality and compliance with regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science/Biological Science or Equivalent
  • Current Licensure as a Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (CMS) License or a CLS license with the experience applicable to microbiology in the State of California
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the hospital
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Must be willing to work variable shifts and overtime as required
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with lab/hospital computer systems and software
  • Applicable prior experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, including experience with various identification platforms and antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods.
  • Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families

Pay Rates: Min - $53.55 | Max - $71.94
