Job Description
The Process Chemistry group is responsible for inventing and executing the chemical processes and preparing active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to enable toxicology studies, clinical trials, and drug product development for AbbVie's pre-clinical and clinical candidates. We create valuable intellectual property through composition of matter, chemical processes, and technology, resulting in the development of safe and cost-effective commercial manufacturing processes.
AbbVie Process Chemistry is seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineering Scientist I to conduct chemical process research and development, supporting projects from pre-clinical stages through commercialization.
Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will be responsible for design and conduct of high throughput experiments (HTE) to support clinical development of potential therapies, which may include small molecules, antibody drug conjugates, and peptides
- With some supervision, performs laboratory research or method development utilizing liquid and solid dispensing robotics and analytical instrumentation
- Qualitatively and quantitatively characterizes reaction outcome to account for yield, impurity profile and mass balance
- Responsible for documenting and completing experiments in ELN and capture of HTE results in a timely manner
- Applies practical considerations, principles of organic chemistry, and mechanistic insights to problem solving, especially in automation and high throughput development.
- Adheres to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, quality, and appropriate handling of materials
- Understand the goal and maintain high proficiency in his/her projects as well as the overall program.
- Perform routine and complex tasks competently and independently and generate reliable and consistent results.
- With supervision, develops new protocols for adapting HTE automation to new work-flows including conception, troubleshooting and robustness studies to accomplish novel solutions.
- Learns fast, grasps the "essence", and can change course quickly where indicated
- Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and typically 3+ years of experience, Master's Degree or equivalent education and typically 0-2 years of experience
- Educational background in chemical engineering, chemistry and/or automation engineering
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Excellent communication (oral and written) skills
- Experience working in a cross functional collaborative environment
- Must have a "results-oriented" work ethic and a positive "can-do" attitude with a strong sense of urgency and self-motivated desire to achieve
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in automation, high and medium throughput experimentation.
- Hands-on experience with one or more laboratory liquid or solid handling automation platforms (e.g. Beckman, Tecan, Hamilton).
- Experience in handling small molecules, antibody drug conjugates, and potent compounds
- Experience in operating analytical instruments such as HPLC, UPLC, GC, NMR, etc.
