We are seeking a highly motivated materials scientist to lead the materials processing and additive manufacturing (AM) efforts at the JHU's Materials Characterization and Processing center (MCP), a multi-user shared instrumentation facility in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), Whiting School of Engineering . The position will report to the Executive Director of the MCP and will involve outward facing activities with the broader JHU community, including the School of Medicine, as well as the international electron microscopy community. This is a non-tenure track faculty position of the DMSE funded at 100% FTE.
Responsibilities
+ Oversee and operate advanced materials processing instruments at the MCP (A laser powder directed energy deposition, and an ultrasonic metal atomizer).
+ Train users on measurement techniques, proper operation of instruments, and sample preparation.
+ Provide technical expertise, consultation, and collaboration for user research projects.
+ Develop, investigate, and apply new procedures, instrumentation, and techniques.
+ Assist preparation of research proposals, scientific papers, and conference presentations.
+ Perform equipment maintenance and repairs to maximize equipment performance and availability. Troubleshoot hardware and software. Coordinate repairs with vendors.
+ Develop, implement, and update user training procedures, instrument operation procedures, and equipment maintenance procedures.
+ Participate in acquisition efforts for capital equipment and instrumentation including preparation of instrument acquisition proposals.
+ Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
+ Stay apprised of developments in experimental instrumentation and technology gaps in AM
+ Development of novel AM processes.
+ Performs other related work as needed.
Qualifications
A PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering or closely related field is required with experience in additive manufacturing
Preferred Qualifications
+ Knowledge of technical, operational, user training, and maintenance requirements of a shared core user research instrumentation facility.
- Experience with laser powder directed energy deposition or cold spray technology.
+ Experience with 3D printing, 3D modeling, CAD design, laser cutting, and digital fabrication technologies.
+ Experience with training and providing support to users at a core facility.
+ Experience with science outreach programs.
