By joining the DEP-DEPS as a Chemist 1 in Franklin county, you will have the opportunity to prepare and extract PFAS samples for analysis by LC/MS/MS.

Holders of the position will complete tasks such as:

  • Preparation samples for PFAS (Per-and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances) for analysis by LC/MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometers).
  • Extraction of samples for PFAS (Per-and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances) for analysis by LC/MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometers
  • Preparation of solutions and standards as required by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drinking Water, USEPA Wastewater and USEPA SW (Solid Waste)-846 Hazardous Waste Methods for the extraction and analysis of PFAS and other organic compounds in drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, fish and mussel tissue and soil
  • Maintains and troubleshoots equipment used for the preparation and extraction of samples for analysis of PFAS
  • Schedules, tracks, and fulfills orders for PFAS sample collection bottles for trip and field blank, duplicates, spikes, and samples with their proper preservation

Additional position information: travel required, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or in a natural, physical, forensic science or a related science field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances, or compounds when performing chemical analysis, which may require utilization of safety measures. Field work may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
