Under general supervision, to perform, analyze, and interpret a variety of both routine standardized and less routine clinical laboratory testing procedures; to develop and maintain specialized laboratory equipment and procedures.

O'Connor Hospital - O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.

St. Louise Regional Hospital - Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.

Regional Medical Center Regional Medical Center (RMC) is a 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San Jose, treating a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years. Since the SCVH integration of RMC effective 4/1/25, RMC has expanded the critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care, and has been seeing an increased number of emergency visits and inpatient volume.

Typical Tasks
  • Calibrates test equipment and instruments;
  • Carries out and interprets existing laboratory routines, methods, and procedures;
  • Independently performs laboratory testing procedures and may be required to perform testing within established limits in several laboratory sections;
  • Reviews quality control records to determine whether test results are accurate within prescribed limits and makes necessary adjustments;
  • Regularly maintains quality control programs consistent with specific laboratory policies and procedures;
  • Regularly maintains all equipment relevant to assigned area according to equipment specifications and established laboratory policies and procedures and performs emergency repair, as required;
  • Assists other laboratory personnel with problems that they are unable to resolve;
  • Orients and trains students and new employees;
  • Collects specimens from patients;
  • Maintains adequate records, such as worksheets, logs, inventory lists, QC (Quality Control) checklists, and other laboratory records as needed;
  • Prepares reagents, stains, and other test/procedure materials;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities.

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through three (3) years of full-time experience equivalent to a Clinical Laboratory Scientist I in the County of Santa Clara.

Special Requirement
Possession of a valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Bioanalyst, Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Chemist, or Clinical Microbiologist license, issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services, as appropriate for the area of specialization. is required.

Knowledge of:

  • Modern training methods;
  • Proper safety precautions and procedures utilized in handling all types of laboratory specimens, reagents, chemicals, and hazardous waste;
  • Clinical laboratory principles, procedures, and practices related to microbiology, hematology, immunology, biochemistry, toxicology, and immunohematology;
  • Use, care, maintenance, repair, and inventory of various laboratory equipment, instruments, and supplies;
  • Normal and abnormal test results;
  • Quality control methods and procedures appropriate to a clinical laboratory.

Ability to:

  • Provide support and assistance utilizing teamwork to resolve problems and promote achievement of common goals;
  • Train all levels of laboratory personnel in technical laboratory procedures and equipment usage;
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, adjust, and maintain highly sensitive laboratory equipment according to manufacturer's specifications and established laboratory, procedures; make necessary emergency equipment repairs;
  • Review the work of students and other laboratory personnel, checking for accuracy within specifications;
  • Independently perform standard, complex, and non-routine clinical laboratory tests accurately and with skill;
  • Collect specimens from patients with skill, patience, and tact;
  • Be sensitive, courteous, and responsive;
  • Maintain records and prepare technical, factual reports of test results;
  • Follow written and oral technical directions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Evaluate normal and abnormal test results.
