The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer Senior to join Drs. Jie Xiao (ME) and Jihui Yang (Materials Science Engineering) in their research programs on energy manufacturing science and engineering.

This position will support UW's growing research in the field of energy manufacturing science and technologies, covering both fundamental and applied research related with electrochemical energy storage and manufacturing from materials synthesis, scaleup, cost model to cell design, prototyping and manufacturing. Energy storage and manufacturing emphasizes interdisciplinary research thus the field of research is expected to be cross different fields with extensive collaborations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as a leader perform independent original research

Lead the team to develop new research approaches, hypotheses, and methods.

Leads the development of intellectual property.

Analyze data and synthesize results into major scientific findings.

Write high impact journal papers.

Act as a key resource for UW and its collaborators by resolving problems, addressing needs, and identifying research opportunities.

Identifies & leads research funding activities.

Has a good reputation and ability to attract significant funding.

Ideate, develop, and submit federal grant proposals by leveraging with the candidate's experiences and existing reputation earned from prior positions.

Participates in strategic planning; directs/participates in major proposal preparation & presentation.

Develop study aims, design, data collection methods, data management, and analysis plan.

Oversee and manage different aspects of research grants in support of the PIs.

Monitor and manage research budgets.

Leading research directions and projects coordination:

Applies advanced knowledge to the completion of complex assignments/projects.

Developing as an authority with national recognition.

Deliver focused mentoring and training to senior research staff.

Manages technically complex projects which involve multiple organizations and/or disciplines.

Supervise postdocs students on their research and daily work.

Utilizes individuals on projects to optimize their technical strengths to best meet projects/program need.

Supports the definition of staffing needs, selection and assessment criteria, and the overall hiring process. Leverages a national network to help UW identify and recruit high-caliber research talent.

Integrates project staffing decisions with overall technical strategy.

Coordinate multiple research projects.

Coordinate with multiple collaborative institutions to achieve research aims.

In charge of lab safety.

Outreach

Strengthen UW's collaborations with industry companies by successful delivering research impacts.

Organizes & chairs sessions at technical meetings and presents invited papers.

Attend professional society meetings to present team's important work.

Networks nationally; may receive awards at national level.

Proactively involved in external seminars, workshops, professional societies & committees.

Strong ability to develop & initiate technical standards through interactions with professional societies & key customers.

Has broad network nationally and has a great potential to receive awards at national level.

Prior research experiences helps the candidate to become an authority in the field of energy storage and manufacturing with national recognition.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or related field.

Seven years of relevant experience in electrochemical energy storage and manufacturing.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and skills in the areas of:

  • Synthesis and scale-up of energy-bearing materials.
  • Battery design and prototyping for pouch cells, cylindrical and prismatic batteries.
  • Electrode coating process.
  • Cost model development for advanced battery technologies.

Familiar with manufacturing science from critical materials/mining to recycling.

Trackable record of publishing high impact journal papers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Industry working experiences is a must have.

Working experience in a national lab is a plus.

Experience in winning proposals and leading projects/tasks.
