JOB SUMMARY
Performs moderately complex chemical analysis work. Work involves coordinating the chemical analyses
and physical testing of chemicals, materials, and other products; conducting research; preparing technical
reports; and providing guidance to others. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for
the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Trains and supervises inmates in conducting chemical analyses of materials utilized in manufacturing
soap and wax products.
B. Assists in the development and implementation of laboratory procedures for special research
projects and miscellaneous examinations; and verifies findings and proper treatment procedures with
engineers, water plant operators, physicians, and other officials.
C. Prepares formulas for the manufacture of products; prepares specifications for laboratory chemicals,
equipment, and supplies; and ensures product quality standards.
D. Maintains the security of tools, machinery, and equipment; responds to emergency situations;
performs various correctional and custodial support functions; and assists in maintaining security of
assigned inmates.
- Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education, Experience, and Training
- Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the
Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of
Education (USDE). Major course work in Chemistry or a related field preferred. Each year of
experience as described below in excess of the required three years may be substituted for
thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis.
Three years full-time, wage-earning chemical laboratory work experience.
Experience in the supervision of inmates preferred.
Correctional custody or law enforcement experience preferred.
B. Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of quantitative and qualitative chemical laboratory
tests.
Knowledge of standard physical interpretation and application of test results.
Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules,
and regulations preferred.
Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the
public.
Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Skill in problem-solving techniques.
Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.
Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
Skill to conduct physical and chemical analyses and tests.
Skill in chemical laboratory procedures to include the use and care of laboratory equipment.
Skill to interpret test results.
Skill to train and supervise inmates.

A. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly,
climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift
and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
B. Conditions include working inside, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects,
radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or
irregular hours, constant noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, oils, solvents, working around
moving objects or vehicles, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
C. Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include
computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, laboratory testing equipment,
telephone, dolly, and automobile.
