THE POSITION

As a Chemist 2, your role encompasses a vital array of laboratory tasks focused on the analysis and evaluation of various chemical substances and materials. This position is crucial for ensuring that essential operations within the Bureau are carried out effectively, adapting to the fluctuating demands of different workloads and program requirements. You will engage in meticulous examinations, employing advanced analytical techniques and instrumentation to derive accurate results that inform critical decision-making processes. Your expertise will not only contribute to the integrity of the Bureau's operations but also support the development of innovative solutions to complex chemical challenges, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing a range of chemical tests and analyses with a high degree of precision. You will concurrently engage in professional laboratory work, which involves analyzing and examining various substances and materials to detect environmentally significant analytes using specialized equipment and established methodologies. Your tasks will include conducting GC/ECD and GC/MS analyses, ensuring that all analytical instruments are properly maintained and repaired as needed. Adherence to laboratory and workplace safety protocols is essential at all times to maintain a safe working environment. Additionally, as part of the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process, you will be tasked by your supervisor to perform internal audits of your colleagues' data, meticulously recording your findings and submitting them to the Section Chief for review.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

+ Full-time employment

+ Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

+ Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

+ Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $59,345.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

+ One year as a Chemist 1; or

+ One year of professional chemical analytical experience, and a bachelors degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry; or

+ A graduate degree in chemistry.

+ Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
