DESCRIPTION The Department of Pathology at UC San Diego aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UC San Diego. Under supervision, this position assists with research in a laboratory within the Department of Pathology studying immunity to and pathogenesis of emerging RNA viruses. Specific duties and responsibilities include assisting in performing cell culture, generation of viral stocks, animal husbandry, and execution of viral and immunologic experiments, in addition to general laboratory maintenance. The opportunity to participate with planning and executing an independent project under the guidance of the supervisor is present. Position requires basic knowledge of biologic processes and willingness to learn virology and immunology. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Theoretical knowledge of Immunology, Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, General Chemistry or Genetics, or equivalent combination of education and experience including lab experience. Prior laboratory experience in biomedical research with proficiency in basic laboratory techniques including pipetting, preparation of solutions, and passage of cell lines in tissue culture. Experience with general lab maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies. Excellent interpersonal skills with strong, demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility in a lab environment that interacts with a diverse group of research and technical personnel and other laboratories. Solid computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, email system, and a variety of web-based programs. Demonstrated ability to create and maintain databases, perform standard computer tasks, learn new programs/applications with minimal direction, and exercise fast and accurate typing skills. Demonstrated commitment to update/maintain technology skills with relevant computer software. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in a biomedical science field. Prior experience with molecular cloning Prior experience working with rodents including mouse colony maintenance. Willingness to undertake an independent research project working closely with and under the guidance of the supervisor. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Must be able and willing to work with live rodents. Must be available to work some weekends and evenings to complete experiments as needed. Must be able and willing to work with viruses at BSL-2 level. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
