At the University of Virginia, investigators in the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research (Carter Immunology Center) seek a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works. If they can determine , on the most basic level, how the immune system distinguishes between healthy and harmful cells, this could lead to revolutionary new treatments and cures based on controlling the immune response.
Position Summary
The Beirne-Carter Immunology Center at the University of Virginia seeks to fill a Research Associate position to perform sophisticated experimental research in the development of pathogenic antibodies in the area of allergy and the role of these antibodies in increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The successful candidates must have experience in human clinical allergy research; analysis of human immune cells by high-dimensional flow or mass cytometry and single cell RNA-seq; computational tools for data cleaning, normalization, dimensionality reduction, clustering, and visualization of high-dimensional datasets; and culture of primary B cells and T cells. Qualified applicants with experience in pre-clinical mouse models are preferred.
Responsibilities
Further, the incumbents will be responsible for ordering lab reagents, generating abstracts and manuscripts of sufficient quality to be published in high impact journals and for supervising undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates are expected to work in a team-based environment.

Education: Doctoral degree
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD, or equivalent degree in a relative scientific field of study by appointment start date, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven grant writing skills is also important (e.g., post-doctoral awards and/or submitted PI-level
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
