Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Pathology Laboratory Manager is responsible for the daily oversight of the assigned laboratory section, including technical operations, personnel and fiscal management. Functions as a CLIA general supervisor for the section by taking remedial action when test systems deviate from established norms, prevents release until malfunctioning systems corrected, provides orientation and training to testing personnel, annually evaluates and documents performance competency of testing personnel.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for technical operations to include: monitors daily, weekly, monthly, annual quality control (QC) per established procedures; troubleshoots QC/instrument issues; ensures policies and procedures are accurate, up to date, and inspection ready; ensures appropriate inventory of reagents, QC material and other supplies; maintains an effective preventive maintenance program for instruments and other equipment; monitors and ensures turnaround time goals are met and if not, implements changes to remediate; serves as a technical resource to staff; monitors other performance measures such as corrected reports, specimen deficiencies, aberrant results and critical values/findings; investigates problems related to areas of responsibility and implements corrective actions that are identified
  • Responsible for personnel management to include: participates in recruitment, interviewing and selection of staff as well as makes recommendations for transfers and promotions; ensures appropriate training of new staff, training of current staff on new procedures and/or instrumentation and other required education and training; ensures appropriate six month and annual competency assessment for employees; performs coaching, rounding, performance appraisals in a timely manner; initiates disciplinary actions in conjunction with Human Resources approval; establishes/approves daily, weekend, and holiday schedules
  • Responsible for fiscal management to include: biweekly approval of timecards and monitoring attendance/punctuality according to SOP; monitors section's productivity and coordinates staffing plan for effective use of personnel at optimal cost; monitors section's supply and other expenses and provides input into the annual capital and operational budgets; reviews and evaluates supply and equipment needs and makes appropriate recommendations; evaluates cost effectiveness of new methods, equipment and repairs/replacement; participates in vendor negotiations to obtain material and equipment as requested
  • Monitors section's activities to ensure adherence to all regulatory and safety regulations: ensures proficiency testing is completed on time and accurately, reviews returned results and follows up on any non-compliances according to SOPs; monitors laboratory section activities for continual compliance and preparedness for internal and external (e.g. CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA, CLIA, SDOH, etc) inspections; maintains a quality system/plan appropriate for the section, including monitoring quality assurance data and develops process improvements as appropriate
  • Responsible for the management of the appropriate laboratory computer system as it relates to resulting, reporting, downtime procedures and other compliance regulations that affect its use, in conjunction with hospital IT analysts; ensures validation of changes made to the system and documentation
  • Ensures adequate training of medical technology, cytotechnology, medical laboratory technicians and any other student learners during their rotations in the Eskenazi Health laboratory; assists with other training, tours, and job shadowing as requested
  • Ensures Administrative Director and/or Medical Director (or Section Medical Director, as appropriate) is informed of potential or existing problems with regulatory issues, technical issues, operational issues or customer service
  • Evaluates and selects new procedures and instrumentation or equipment and ensures validation and start up studies are complete; writes procedures, ensures staff are trained, computer changes are complete, etc before implementation
  • Assists with achievement of hospital and department goals; monitors performance measures such as turnaround times, error rates, incident reports, critical value reports, and suggests/implements improvements to meet goal or fix issues identified
  • Performs other duties as requested/required

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited U.S. college or university is required. Foreign degrees must be officially assessed to determine U.S. equivalency. ASCP or equivalent certification is required
  • 5 years progressive responsibility in a clinical laboratory
  • Familiar with regulations regarding laboratory practice and accrediting/inspecting agencies guidelines (e.g. CAP, CLIA, TJC, AABB, FDA, ISDH)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
