NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Assistant Project Scientist (APS) makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project within his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to operate at a high level of competence. The appointee will engage in activities to increase, enhance, or upgrade his/her competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may participate in university and public service. Although the APS is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. Instead, he/she will carry out research or creative programs under the supervision of an individual in an academic role that automatically confers Principal Investigator status. The APS typically does not serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so in exceptional circumstances.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
RESEARCH (90%)
The Assistant Project Scientist (APS), collaborating with faculty member Luis Carvajal-Carmona (LCC), will participate in the design, preparation, and execution of wet lab experiments, as well as analyze data and draft or revise manuscripts and grant applications. The APS will lead and engage in research studies on genetic susceptibility to diseases, functional genomics, pre-clinical research, and community-participatory research, with a focus on cancer. Additionally, the APS will conduct analyses in cancer germline, somatic genetics, functional genomics, and epidemiology.
The APS will create and implement genome engineering and bioinformatics tools for generating and analyzing isogenic cell lines. This includes planning, executing, and analyzing drug efficacy assays in cancer cell lines, patient-derived organoid cultures, and xenografts. The APS will also develop cellular assays from CRISPR-Cas9 (such as CRISPR screens) or other molecular perturbagens like RNAi, small molecules, and cDNAs. Additionally, the APS will perform bioinformatics and statistical analyses of functional and genomic data, as well as functional analyses of disease-linked variants. The APS will also interact with other members of the LCC laboratory and with collaborators on various projects. The candidate will prepare drafts of all manuscripts related to their research project(s) and is expected to help mentor and train undergraduate and graduate students and other members of the LCC laboratory, including instruction on the use and development of functional genomics projects. The candidate is expected to maintain and troubleshoot protocols and processes in the lab and support laboratory management. The candidate will perform management and leadership tasks, including, but not limited to, ordering and installing wet lab-related instruments, providing technical assistance when needed, ordering supplies, and processing invoices.
