Senior Research Scientist**

**Job Summary:**

The Senior Research Scientist is a established leader in cell biology and electrophysiology research and will lead experimentation that supports preclinical, collaborative, and drug discovery projects. In addition, the Senior Research Scientist will contribute to contribute to the supervision of staff, lead the preparation of manuscripts and reports, and work with other organization units to ensure compliance with HPU and funding policies.

**Compensation: $46,667 annually**

**This is a part-time (30% FTE), exempt, on-site position based at Hawai'i Pacific University. The position is funded through a sub-award of a federally sponsored NIH grant and includes institutional support. The total annualized salary equivalent for this role is $160,000, with 30% of time and effort committed to HPU. Compensation reflects the time allocated to the University under the shared funding structure of this grant.**

This position is contingent upon continued funding under the terms of the sub-award. Any change to funding status may impact the position's duration or compensation.

**Qualifications:**

**Minimum Qualifications:**

Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field

Proven experience in leading and managing cell biology experimental research projects

Eight or more years' experience in cell culture, fluorescent cell imaging, RNA and DNA handling, and electrophysiology (including patch-clamp instrumentation and multi-well plate reader instrumentation)

Eight or more years' experience in supervising the maintenance and operation of cell culture instrumentation and supporting laboratories.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, IGOR, and statistical software (e.g., GraphPad)

**Desired Qualifications:**

Demonstration of scientific expertise and leadership through peer-reviewed publications.

Five years or more experience in preclinical drug discovery.

Expertise in ion channel biology, especially magnesium transport proteins and systems.

Expertise in global brain ischemia and related brain cell biology.

Experience with database management and quality control of data

Demonstrated ability to manage technical staff in research settings.

Broad experience working with collaborators in multi-institutional research projects.

**Other Qualifications:**

Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.

Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.

Able to work all shifts and extended hours.

**Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:**

**1. Plan and supervise preclinical cell culture experiments to support drug development (80%)**

Ensure maintenance of cell cultures, cell storage, and ordering of supplies.

Oversee cell and patch-clamp experiments.

Oversee fluorescent cell imaging on single cells and in multi-well plates.

Oversee cell transformation and cDNA overexpression.

Oversee mRNA and cDNA analyses.

Oversee and conduct analysis data using statistical software and prepare presentations.

Provide leadership in solving and implementing solutions in technical research projects.

**2. Contribute to Ttraining and supervision of students in assisting in the preclinical cell culture experiments (5%)**
