Job Summary:
Delaware Valley University invites applications for a Laboratory Manager who will also serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the institution to start in the Fall 2025 semester. The Lab Manager is responsible for the overall organization and routine operation of the biology and chemistry instructional laboratories. Successful candidates will be organized, be able to communicate effectively with colleagues who are teaching the laboratory exercises, manage work study student duties, and order all necessary lab supplies. As the Chemical Hygiene Officer, this position focuses on the campus-wide management of chemical inventory, and hazardous waste handling and disposal. The CHO will also be responsible for scheduling safety training. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the Dean of Business, Arts and Sciences but working collaboratively with the chairs of biology and chemistry, the Laboratory Manager will:
- Coordinate, order, and receive living and non-living supplies as needed.
- Monitor the inventory of chemicals and supplies.
- Manage work study students for the biology and chemistry departments.
- Prepare materials for and set-up first year labs.
- Ensure materials for each lab section are available.
- Review each week's laboratory set-up prior to launch.
- Troubleshoot/problem solve lab issues as issues develop.
- Oversee the maintenance and use of laboratory instruments.
- Communicate to all instructors, materials to be used in labs.
- Ensure prepared materials clearly labeled.
- Work with faculty to maintain stock cultures of various biological organisms.
- In conjunction with University personnel, be able to safely keep and dispose of hazardous wastes.
As the Chemical Hygiene Officer:
- Work with the faculty and administration to maintain and update a Chemical Hygiene Plan as needed in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
- Schedule regular OSHA laboratory safety training for faculty, staff, and students who work with hazardous chemicals. (Training will be provided by Third Party.) Maintain centralized records documenting training.
- Work with faculty to monitor safe use and disposal of chemicals. Ensure that chemicals and lab waste are being collected on a regular basis.
- Investigate and complete a report for any incident involving chemicals or exposure.
- Attend RCRA, DOT, and other regulatory training as requested.
- Learn and apply the contents of relevant regulations concerning chemical safety.
- Act as a resource for students, faculty, and staff on problems related to chemical safety. Provide guidance to faculty on developing and implementing safety procedures for new projects.
- Perform laboratory safety audits/inspections and ensure that safety infrastructure, such as fume hoods, eye wash stations, and emergency showers are tested as needed (may be performed by third party).
- Manage annual hazardous and biological waste disposal.
- Ensure personal protective equipment is available and used as indicated in the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
- Ensure relevant information about chemical hazards, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), is readily accessible.
Education and Experience:
- B.S. in Biochemistry, or related discipline, MS preferred
- Experience with modern laboratory instrumentation is desirable
- An aptitude for routine repair and maintenance of equipment is a plus
- The Manager must have good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, as well as possess excellent organizational skills
- The Manager should enjoy working with college-age students; previous experience supervising, training, and scheduling workers is a plus
- Basic computer skills are required
