Salary Range
$72,100.00 - $111,850.00
Overview The West Campus Materials Characterization Core (YWCMCC) at Yale University has an opening available for highly qualified, highly motivated applicants for the position of Staff Scientist, with a focus on materials characterization. YWCMCC is a university service provider supporting the entirety of the Yale research enterprise. The Staff Scientist will work well in a multi-user facility and as part of a broader analytical services team. Reporting to the Materials Characterization Core Director, the Staff Scientist will provide technical support and instruct faculty, graduate student, and postdoctoral researchers in the use of various materials characterization instruments. Key responsibilities include: 1) Provide consultation and training for several characterization instruments including Raman, PPMS, AFM, BET and sample preparation tools including Sputter Coater, Auto Press and Ball Mill. 2) Perform routine maintenance tasks, identify and correct malfunctions, interact with equipment vendors as necessary, to ensure equipment is in proper working order. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Please provide a cover letter. Demonstrated operation experiences on optical spectroscopy including Raman and Photoluminescence (PL). 2. Proven operation experience in PPMS/SQUID. 3. Familiar with AFM operation. 4. Mechanical and electronic skills relevant to maintenance, troubleshooting and repair. 5. Broad research background on material property studies using Raman, PPMS, AFM, and other tools including XRD and SEM/EDS. Excellent interpersonal skills suited to a multiuser environment. Demonstrated ability to organize and support multiple projects for multiple users. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills Ph.D. in materials research from Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or five years of postgraduate experience in related fields. Instrument maintenance experience on materials characterization tools including AFM, BET, and PPMS/SQUID. Operating experiences on other tools such as SEM/EDS, XRF and XRD.
Principal Responsibilities
- User Training: Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research core. 2. Experiment Support: Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research core. 3. Facility/Instrument Support: Manage and oversee research projects within the research core. 4. Technique Development: Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core services. 5. Data Analysis/Interpretation: Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and recommendations. 6. Equipment Procurement: Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment. 7. Professional Development: Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific conferences. 8. Scientific Participation: Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals 9. Staff Training and Mentoring: Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff members. 10. Vendor Relations: Manage vendor relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates new technologies for optimal procurement processes. 11. Education and Outreach: Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
