The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Researcher Scientist Senior to join their team

General Responsibilities

A Research Scientist Senior oversees substantial research projects, providing expert guidance and ensuring rigorous scientific standards. This role involves a broader scope of responsibility, including project management, cross-functional collaboration, and securing funding through grant proposals. Senior scientists exercise considerable discretion in research decisions and play a pivotal role in shaping the research agenda. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides research and technical support to one or more Principal Investigators.

  • Maintains accurate and clean E-notebooks with detailed procedures and proper analytical data attached.

  • Compiles and maintains all data for compounds for the development of structure-activity relationships.

  • Contributes to progress reports, publications and patents derived from project data.

  • Collects and interprets analytical/spectral, ADME, and PK data, independently.

  • Observes appropriate safety requirements.

  • Operates, maintains scientific equipment, and learns new instrumental techniques.

  • Maintains awareness of current literature.

  • Attends and presents regular progress updates for the assigned projects in a timely manner.

  • Designs, synthesizes, purifies, and fully characterizes organic molecules for drug discovery programs with limited supervision.

  • Manages/supervises any undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows as appropriate.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $81,525- $ 132,475

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience OR Master's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • BS in Chemistry or related discipline and 7 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis; or MS in Chemistry or related discipline and 5 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis; or Ph.D. in Chemistry or related discipline and 3 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis.

  • Strong synthetic organic chemistry background is preferred.

  • Keen interest in understanding the application of medicinal chemistry principles.

  • Ability to observe appropriate safety requirements.

  • Advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures and methods of analysis associated with the synthesis of new compounds.

  • Competency in ChemDraw, MestReNova, Microsoft Office Suites products and other relevant software.
