The Clinical Laboratory at Zuckerberg San Francisco General provides laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients of ZSFG, Laguna Honda Hospital, District Health Centers, and other facilities under the auspices of the SF Public Health Department. Under the direction of the Quality Assurance (QA) Manager, the employee performs technical laboratory aspects of Point of Care Testing and activities to support the laboratory and hospital Quality Management policies. This position performs Point of Care Testing procedures, computer functions, quality control, preventative maintenance, and regulatory compliance. This position performs all duties in a manner that denotes the team concept and reflects the UCSF Code of Conduct and ZSFG mission, vision, and values.

Performs validation studies by running precision, linearity, and comparison testing for instruments. Performs data entry and statistical analysis of the results.

  • Assists Quality Assurance Manager and Laboratory Director in ensuring regulatory compliance standards for waived and non-waived testing are met throughout the institution.
  • Oversees maintenance of permissions and users for the non-conforming event tracking, the hazardous waste, chemical inventory, temperature monitoring, document control, and staff competency systems.
  • Assists Quality Assurance Manager and Laboratory Director with risk assessments, event tracking and stratification, quality plans and assessments, corrective actions, process improvements, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Assists with review of proficiency testing records, assignments, evaluation, and investigation tracking.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert or Advanced Reporting User, provides guidance to all laboratory sections on EPIC reports and dashboards.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in laboratory licensing, supporting the campus clinics in maintaining licensure.

Maintains expertise and provides technical consultation for assigned methods.

  • Maintains a working knowledge and proficiency of all non-waived POCT instruments to perform troubleshooting and apply critical thinking to assist when needed.
  • Assists with reagent and/or control lot conversions and validations from the waived team, as applicable.
  • Assists with the timely completion of preventative maintenance of clinical instruments for non-waived POC tests.
  • Prepares monthly quality reports for assigned methods for the Quality Assurance Manager and the Laboratory Director. Reviews critical value documentation, turnaround time, and ordering reports as requested.
  • Performs ad hoc calibration and timely semi-annual calibration verification and linearity assessments (as applicable) for assigned methods and test systems.
  • Assists with semi-annual method correlations for POCT analytes through data collection and generation of statistical reports that compare methods reporting identical analytes in the laboratory and other hospital testing locations.
  • Working knowledge of the POCT middleware and Laboratory Information System to assist with transmission errors, troubleshooting, specimen issues, and pending log activities.

Develops collaborative and interactive working relationships with laboratory staff, nursing staff, medical staff, vendors, and product manufacturing companies to assist with laboratory initiatives.

  • Assists in training and ongoing educational in-services for physicians, nursing staff, respiratory service staff, and new employees.
  • Participates in training students or residents, developing training and educational materials.
  • Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills by interacting positively, constructively, and respectfully with all laboratory staff, management, faculty, hospital personnel, patients, contractors, and guests.
  • Participates as a team member, promoting a collaborative and team-oriented environment. Accountable for own work responsibilities.
  • Actively participates in team huddles, meetings and projects

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $66.80 - $83.22 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications:
  • Possession of a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health.
  • Graduation from college with a bachelors degree in biochemistry or an appropriate scientific field and a minimum of two years Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) experience in Point of Care (POC)Testing and Quality Assurance (QA) or Quality Management (QM) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of chemistry, immunology, and/or hematology instrumentation.
  • Able to work independently, under pressure; recognize and resolve problems while maintaining a high level of organization
  • PC skills and experience with a laboratory computer system
  • Proof of vaccination and booster for Covid-19
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills relative to clinical results.
  • Experience with RALS middleware, EPIC Beaker laboratory information system, or similar.
