Utah State Crime Lab-
The Utah Bureau of Forensic Services Laboratory System (aka, the State Crime Lab) was created by the Legislature to provide timely and comprehensive criminalistic services to criminal justice entities within the State of Utah. By statute (53-10-104), the laboratory shall: "(5) analyze evidence from crime scenes and crime-related incidents for criminal prosecution; (6) provide criminalistics laboratory services to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys' and agencies, and public defenders..."
Principal duties
  • Perform scientific analysis of convicted offender, arrestee, and biological relatives of missing persons samples.
  • Perform DNA analysis using Polymerase Chain Reaction/Short Tandem Repeats (PCR/STR) based methods.
  • Interpret profiles for completeness and upload into the offender database (CODIS).
  • Perform scientific examination of biological evidence.
Requirements
  • BA/BS degree in a natural science.
  • BA/BS degree must have included and successfully completed work in the following clearly defined courses: Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Statistics/Population Genetics
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation as well as a polygraph examination and drug test.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Will have knowledge of biological evidence collection and preservation techniques, rules of evidence, forensic serology, and basic human anatomy and physiology.
  • Will have experience with forensic DNA laboratory technologies and techniques, including Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis, and capillary electrophoresis methods.
  • Will have experience with interpretation and comparison of DNA profiles using GMID-X software.
  • Will have experience with database applications such as LIMS and CODIS.

May be filled with a Forensic Scientist I $32.51, Forensic Scientist II $36.58 or Senior Forensic Scientist $41.34.
