The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) is seeking an accomplished and dynamic forensic science professional to serve as Senior Forensic Scientist in the Crime Scene Unit for the Montgomery County Police Crime Laboratory in the Forensic Science and Evidence Management Division.

Our commitment to collaboration with law enforcement, legal professionals, and the community fosters trust and contributes to a safer society.The employee will be responsible for lead-level, full performance forensic scientist work while serving as the Crime Scene Unit training coordinator. Full performance forensic scientist work includes demonstrating proficiency in the processing of various crime scenes to include assessment, documentation, identification, preservation, collection, and processing of physical evidence; development and collection of fingerprint evidence; examination and processing of evidence using standardized and accepted testing methods and providing expert testimony.
This position is responsible for lead-level administrative assignments to include assigning work to subordinate employees; reviewing work products; providing guidance in unfamiliar methods and procedures; reviewing case files and reviewing/writing reports and providing input into employee performance evaluations. This position is also able to fill the Technical Leader position if needed.
Duties include coordinating the training of newly hired Forensic Scientists within the Crime Scene Unit; updating and maintaining the Crime Scene Unit Training Manual; implementing and conducting training for the Montgomery County Police Department; and coordinating external presentations for community and school events while maintaining a full case load.
The employee will be required to work rotating shifts and weekends and will be subject to on-call statusExperience: Five (5) years of professional experience in a laboratory or crime scene unit actively engaged in the forensic sciences, with particular area of forensic science expertise linked to the position vacancy.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in a natural, physical, or forensic science. Currently possess instructor certification through the state of MD or ability to obtain it within training period.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of scientific education and forensic science experience may be substituted as permitted by applicable Federal and/or State mandates and certifying bodies.
- Proficiency in the processing of crime scenes and associated items of evidentiary value.
- Ability to qualify and provide expert witness testimony.
- Experience communicating effectively with others.
- Experience writing and reviewing detailed reports.
- Experience and/or knowledge of ANAB and COMAR accreditation guidelines and standards.
- Experience instructing and/or training others in forensic applications.
