POSITION PURPOSE
DCM has an opening for a research scientist/engineer senior position to participate in Biomedical research in biology of aging including geroscience and nutrient metabolism, age-related diseases, and age-related animal and three-dimensional cell model development. Provide senior level, seasoned professional planning, execution and implementation of research related to geroscience and comparative medicine programs, including identification, characterization, and application of longevity interventions and cellular mechanisms using a variety of standard and novel animal and cell culture models.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT AND CONDUCT OF RESEARCH (60%)
Effectively applies extensive and diversified knowledge of scientific research principles and approaches in improving public health in aging populations through biomedical research and animal and cellular model systems.
Develops sophisticated research methods and approaches to solve complex research program aims associated with healthy aging and intervention of age-related diseases.
Plays a key role as principle investigator or co-investigator in the preparation of research grants and acquisition of research funding through new idea generation and working with internal and external investigators in the scientific development of research projects.
Serves as primary author, senior author, or key contributor on scientific manuscripts, major reports, products, papers, presentations in peer reviewed journals and other media outlets.
Executes individual or collaborative work plans including animal breeding, examination, treatment, and collection; wet bench work, including western blotting, PCR, histopathology; tissue culturing and characterization, including live cell imaging, flow cytometry, growth and proliferation assays etc. Data logging and analysis.
Presents external seminars, organizes workshops, and participates in professional societies and committees.
Understands various complex data streams used in research programs and projects; effectively evaluates data uses and limitations; and designs research approaches for successful data analyses.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND MENTORING (40%)
Provides direction to investigative teams and staff in effectively accomplishing program/project objectives;
Ensures projects are executed successfully and completed within time frames; Independently activates Investigators and staff in moving toward milestone completion; Tracks milestone completion and/or develops contingency plans, as necessary.
Builds effective teams; manages and measures work; demonstrates personal savvy; clearly and comfortably delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions; clearly assigns responsibility for tasks and decisions; sets clear objectives and measures; steps up to manage conflict when necessary; provides relevant training and mentoring for internal and external team members on project work and research methods.
Directs or mentors junior research scientists and graduate students in technical methodologies and operations; provides constructive and timely feedback on work quantity, quality or professional competencies.
Actively participates in the Geroscience Undergraduate Research Training Program.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Doctoral Degree in a life science discipline (biochemistry, immunology, etc.) or in related field and 6 years relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Technical knowledge of standard laboratory operations and specific requirements for animal and tissue culture centered studies.
Ability to expertly analyze data, interpret results, determine patterns, and infer conclusions.
Ability to organize and present original research both in written manuscript and in oral presentation with visual aids (power point slides etc.)
Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
Accomplished scientific grant writer with a track record of successful funding.
Experience managing research teams.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of bioinformatics analysis of RNA sequencing data from animal tissues and cellular model systems
Quantitative assessment of pharmacokinetic drug testing data in animal models.
Knowledge and skill in using adeno-associated viral vectors in developing models of age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, in aging mice.
Technical knowledge of biobanking of tissues from aging rodents, domestic cats, and nonhuman primates.
Experience working with organ slice cultures collected from cadavers of aging rodents, domestic cats, nonhuman primates, and autopsy tissues from older people.
