Seeking a self-reliant senior optical scientist working in the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Sensors Directorate, Devices Branch to design, program, and characterize photonic circuits. This is a senior level position requiring broad expertise in complex, recursive workflow and hands-on technical involvement. The candidate will collaborate with AFRL modeling and experimentalist team members on optical programmable linear arrays. The candidate will participate in photonic circuit design using trusted foundry PDK in K- Layout; Photonic linear array programming using multiport electrical feedback controller in LabVIEW; Implementation of optimization algorithms from literature; Photonic array optical characterization for fiber optic input and heterogeneously integrated lasers. The candidate will assist in secondary tasks of COMSOL modeling for mitigation of thermal cross talk between photonic devices and III-V laser fabrication process and photonic wire bonding coupling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Photonic circuit design
- Photonic linear array programming
- Photonic array optical characterization
Work Environment:
- Location: On-site at AFRL on Wright Patterson AFB, OH
- Travel Requirements: Minimal 0-20%
- Working Hours: Standard
Qualifications:
Required:
- Security Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret security clearance, which is something only a U.S. citizen can obtain.
- Education: Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or related field is required with 4 years of experience in electrical engineering field. PhD is highly desired.
- Photonic circuit design experience: Use of trusted foundry PDK in K- Layout to design photonic circuits.
- Photonic linear array programming experience: Use of multiport electrical feedback controller in LabVIEW to perform photonic linear array programming.
- Photonic array optical characterization experience: Characterization of photonic arrays for fiber optic input and heterogeneously integrated lasers.
- Must meet AFRL requirements to access Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
Desired:
- COMSOL modeling experience: Performed COMSOL modeling for mitigation of thermal cross talk between photonic devices.
- III-V laser fabrication experience: Performed the III-V laser fabrication process to produce fully functional semiconductor laser devices.
- Photonic wire bonding coupling experience: Performed photonic wire bonding coupling to optically connect photonic chips.
