Job Description

This position is located in the State Environmental Laboratory Services Division - Sample Data Management Section in Oklahoma City. All applicants must be able be able to pass a background check and must be able to legally work within the United States. DEQ does not allow sponsorship for those on a H-1B visa. Basic Purpose

This position in Sample Data Management will greet walk in customers, receive and accession all samples dropped off by all SELSD customer types. Provide technical assistance for all customers, in person, on phone and through email. Run analytical methods for multiple matrix types.

Typical Functions

• Customer Support, Sample Logging, Receipt and Accessioning

• Greet walk-in customers promptly, assist with samples and paperwork, answer any questions, and provide informational publications and materials.

• Coordinate with coworkers to ensure prompt window service is provided as a priority.

• Receive customer payments and provide estimated charges when requested.

• Answer general and procedural questions in a friendly and courteous manner for all customers- in person or via phone and email. Provide current and accurate information according to the requirements for the various programs.

• Receive and accession samples per divisional policies and procedures.

• Enter and provide peer review of dynamic data.

• Provide program support for various SELSD programs.

• Perform section opening and closing procedures.

• Respond to internal staff inquiries promptly to avoid reporting delays.

• Technical Operations

• Regularly monitor LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and review sample chain of custody forms for pending screenings or analyses performed by Sample Management staff.

• Train to perform assigned analyses using approved standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instruction documents (WIDs).

• Perform all assigned training and specialized role responsibilities.

• Complete sample and waste disposal.

Travel Requirements

In some cases, travel, overtime, and weekend work will be required to maintain basic operations or to meet emergency demands.

Education and Experience

Level I - bachelor's degree in chemistry, biological or environmental science.

Level II - those identified in level I plus one year of professional level experience in a laboratory; OR a masters degree in chemistry or biological or environmental science.

To be considered for this position applicants must be within 60 days of obtaining their degree.

• Understand and interpret analytical data, scientific literature, and federal regulations

• Demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office suite

• Problem solve and implement effective solutions

• Apply basic quantitative and analytical principles

Physical Requirements

• work under a variety of normal laboratory conditions which include the presence and use of chemicals, energized equipment, non-ionizing radiation (radio frequency, microwave and sound), low-activity radioactive sources, and sources of extreme temperature, pressure and pH.

• lift 30 pounds independently

• stand several hours per day

• perform repetitive tasks

• wear personal protective equipment to include coats, gloves, and eyewear.

• manual dexterity and visual acuity to perform routine laboratory tasks, such as pipetting, instrument maintenance, accurately reading narrow glassware graduations, distinguishing solvent layers/phase boundaries, etc.
