This position is responsible for the hatchery production of oyster larvae and seed at the Oyster Hatchery station in Grand Isle, LA. RA will independently coordinate larvae production by coordinating oyster larvae broods, managing larval production systems, and maintain inventory of chemical and supplies for larval production. Occasionally, the research associate will be involved in research projects. Research projects may focus on water quality, broodstock conditioning and spawning, oyster restoration, and multi-trophic aquaculture. The research associate may travel for conferences and other work-related meetings.

Job Responsibilities:

Independently coordinate all oyster larvae broods (including spawning); coordinate all larval production systems; maintain inventory of chemical and supplies for larval production. Oversee all larval production personnel (summer workers, graduate students, and other employees). Support general hatchery operations including maintenance and operation activities involved in broodstock conditioning, water quality monitoring, algae production, and nursery and farm activities. Collect samples and processing data. (85%)

Provide support on any research projects being conducted at the hatchery or in the field. This includes reading scientific papers from peer-reviewed journals and manuals from other hatcheries across the United States. (10%)

Other duties as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Animal Science or related field and 2 years of related experience OR a Master's degree in a related field.

A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Basic trade skills (i.e, plumbing) are necessary for this position but not required if applicant is willing to learn.
Experience in aquatic animal husbandry is desired.
Experience in larval production of marine organisms is desired.

Special/Physical Qualifications:

This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position located at SG OYS Hatchery Operation Center in Grand Isle, Louisiana. Work schedule varies from week to week. Work hours are equivalent to 40 hours per week. Schedule will include some weekend work during production season. Must be able to live on or near Grand Isle. Due to the nature and / or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to alcohol/drug testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
