Summary of the Position
The Food Scientist is responsible for hands-on, day-to-day activities related to new product development, product optimization, and cost optimization across all JBSS business channels and product categories. This role plays a key part in fulfilling numerous R&D sample requests and supporting various innovation projects. The individual will also assist in managing customer relationships and serve as a technical liaison. Additionally, this role may contribute to long-term branded innovation projects as needed.
Functions of the Position:
- Develops new products from benchtops through execution, delivers cost-saving initiatives, and leads quality improvement projects that meet consumer and customer requirements in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Collaborates with internal teams (marketing and sales) and external customers on new items, innovative projects, and sample requests to ensure objectives are met clearly, efficiently, and on time.
- Leverages external suppliers creatively to source new raw materials, flavors, and sensory evaluation resources.
- Works with internal departments (R&D, production, accounting, procurement, etc.) to develop innovative and on-trend formulas compatible with JBSS capabilities.
- Integrate into JBSS production by working with schedulers, supervisors, operators, packaging, and QA to scale up and commercialize products.
- Documents raw material and finished goods specifications for integration into JBSS systems.
- Develops draft ingredient statements and Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) panels.
- Collaborates with technical services on allergen, Kosher, labeling, specification, and claims-related issues.
- Maintains and updates R&D records and documents JBSS processes and procedures.
- Partners with Procurement and Production teams on cost optimization projects.
- Participate in JBSS Strategic Value Analysis (SVA) initiatives.
Education, Experience, and Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science/Technology or Food/Chemical Engineering is required.
- A Master's degree is preferred.
- Internship experience in a food company is highly desired; prior work experience is also preferred.
- Demonstrated technical abilities in food science or product development are required.
- Culinary experience is a plus.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
- Strong communication and cross-functional teamwork skills are essential.
- Ability to maintain a neat and organized work area.
- Project management skills are preferred.
