Job Summary

Medicines for All (M4ALL), a part of Virginia Commonwealth University, is an entrepreneurial, impact-oriented institute founded with commitment to improving access to medications across the globe by driving down production costs. We do this, in part, by developing low-cost, high-quality routes for the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Our work supports treatments for diseases such as COVID-19, HIV, TB, and malaria.

We are seeking a Senior Analytical Chemist with a strong blend of technical expertise, leadership abilities, and strategic vision to help us drive technological advancements and make affordable medications accessible worldwide! Key Responsibilities

The Senior Analytical Chemist is will play a key leadership role at M4ALL, responsible for overseeing the implementation of robust, accurate and high-quality analytical processes and the continuous advancement of M4ALLs analytical assets and capabilities. Our new colleague will bring a strong technical background in small molecule drug substance analysis, a passion for building and leading high-functioning analytical teams, and excellent problem-solving skills. They will foster a culture of safe operations, stringent regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will bring a highly collaborative mindset, bridging analytical workflows between sites while also working with manufacturing and research teams.

Scientific Execution & Innovation

  • Demonstrates in depth knowledge across multiple platforms and high level of method development knowledge in relation to project/client needs.

  • Leads and develops robust hypothesis-driven, methodical experimental plans which leverages DoE / modeling to enhance R&D efficiency/ use of high throughput analytical equipment.

  • Enables delivery of results in a high-paced and time-sensitive environment and enables others in their delivery of the same

  • Analyzes and interprets large scientific datasets to develop data-driven insights

  • Reviews and signs off on a detailed, accurate, and up-to-date electronic documentation to ensure robust knowledge management

  • Conceives and leads justification (investment) and development new technical platforms that accelerate analytical method development in support of drug substance development

  • Participate in all research efforts in order to reduce the cost of treatments in an effort to positively impact global health

  • Demonstrates good quality procedures

  • Has experience in method validation and qualification

  • Serve as a mentor to junior colleagues

  • Ensures that all personnel, students and fellows follow institutional safety procedures

  • Works effectively with diverse teams of scientists, researchers, and stakeholders to compose a coherent multi stakeholder publication

Program Management and Communications

  • Adheres to project timelines and deliverables

  • Ability to inform on timeline setting and costing

  • Independently prepares clear, accurate, and concise written project updates and reports

  • Contributes subject matter expertise in partner engagements, tailoring messaging to disparate audiences' priorities

Strategy and Talent Development

  • Lead evaluation and implementation of new technologies to ensure laboratory stays current

  • Determine areas of improvement which increase efficiency, productivity, quality and technical expertise

  • Oversees and supports onboarding new Scientists, Technicians, Postdocs

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience for Success

We're seeking a dynamic individual with the perfect blend of technical competency and a passion for mission-driven work.

  • BS (14+ yrs), MS (9+ yrs) or PhD (6+ yrs) in analytical chemistry is required. Experience supporting process chemistry development in a pharmaceutical setting is a plus

  • Minimum 5 years work experience in either an ISO or GMP regulated environment

  • Experience with quality release testing

  • Hands-on experience with a wide range of analytical instrumentation including, but not limited to, HPLC, GC, SFC, MS, spectroscopy and other analytical instrumentation and associated software

  • Proven experience in leading innovation and managing teams, with a demonstrated ability to develop talent and foster a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement

  • Strong leadership and project management abilities

  • Ability to work within a fast-paced environment and meet rigorous deadlines

  • Adaptable with the ability to easily and quickly pivot

  • Self-motivated and detailed oriented

  • Demonstrated ability to use good judgment and decision making, responding calmly and effectively in crisis situations

Reporting Structure

This role reports to the Associate Director of Analytical Chemistry and is intended to be a supervisory position as M4ALL continues to expand. Additionally, this role embodies everyday leadership, with an expectation to lead through actions, discussions, decisions, and interactions. As a role model within the organization, you will influence others by consistently demonstrating the values and behaviors that drive our mission forward.

Worksite Location

Upon hire, the workstation will be located at the VA Bio+Tech Park and may occasionally require travel within the greater Richmond area. The primary worksite for this role will be the early clinical-scale manufacturing facility (pilot plant) which is currently under development. During the construction phase of the scale-up facility, this role will be based out of our downtown Richmond site. 100% onsite at the VA Bio+Tech Park
