materials science, systems engineering, or a related field
- Strong understanding of heat transport, mass transport, kinetic, and thermodynamic phenomena within chemical reactors
- 5+ years of experience in chemical or metallurgical process technoeconomics, process modelling, and or life cycle assessment
- Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry
We desire candidates with some cross section of these skills and proficiencies:
- Strong leadership, organization, collaboration, and communication skills
- Familiarity with the chemistry of minerals, slags, mattes, and metals
- Familiarity with current processing pathways for major commodity metals, including steel, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, aluminum, and copper
- Process modelling via software packages such as Aspen Plus
- Thermodynamic calculations for chemical metallurgy applications using software packages such as FactSage, Thermo-Calc, or HSC Chemistry
- Technoeconomic modelling
- Life cycles assessment
- Data analysis and engineering calculations using software packages such as MATLAB, python, or Microsoft Excel
- Statistical methods for data and sensitivity analysis
Your role would include:
- Process flowsheet modelling and simulation to support the selection and design of new pathways for mineral treatment and metal production processes
- Analyzing heat and mass balances, technoeconomics, and sustainability criteria to inform metallurgical/chemical system chemistry, reactor design, process selection, and
feedstock selection
- Working with various stakeholders to conduct process sensitivity analysis to understand technoeconomic and sustainability uncertainties in the selection, design and
implementation of new reactor technologies
- Collaborating with team members to help establish best laboratory, engineering, and operational practices for metallurgical production processes
- Communicating your modelling results with members of the Green Metals Team and to other research and development groups within Outokumpu
