Principal Scientist, Translational Medicine OMNI (Obesity)

  • Genentech
  • South San Francisco, California
  • Full Time
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love

The Translational Medicine (TM-OMNI) Department is at the forefront of translational research, shaping clinical development for key therapeutic areas including Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases. Our work focuses on biomarker discovery, personalized healthcare strategies, drug pharmacology and mechanism of action, and translational research to elucidate the molecular and cellular bases of diseases. This work propels drug development and the identification of novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers.

We are seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist Lab Group Head to spearhead translational research in obesity and associated co-morbidities within TM-OMNI. This role involves providing scientific direction, identifying innovative treatment strategies for obesity using human data, and developing novel approaches to accelerate clinical development through biomarkers.

The Principal Scientist will design translational experiments and utilize human clinical samples along with in-depth molecular and cellular phenotyping techniques to study disease heterogeneity and therapeutic modification, thus enhancing our understanding of disease pathogenesis for drug discovery and development.

The Opportunity:

As a valuable member on the Translational Medicine Cardiovascular and Metabolism Diseases team you will be:

  • Identifying novel targets and biomarkers to advance drug development for obesity and associated comorbidities, particularly focusing on metabolic and/or neurological underpinnings.

  • Leading efforts to support clinical trials, generating and analyzing data from internal studies, and fostering external collaborations to delve into disease pathogenesis and patient variability. Success in these responsibilities requires a thorough understanding of disease and drug target biology, creativity, and attention to detail, and expertise in integrating biomarkers into clinical trials and/or in target identification and validation.

  • Engaging in close collaboration with diverse internal teams, such as Research, Computational Science, Human Genetics, Clinical Sciences, Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology, Biostatistics, Bioanalytical Sciences, and Diagnostics, alongside external partners.

  • Delivering clear and impactful communication through presentations to cross-functional teams, internal review bodies, and at external conferences, and generating written communication for clinical protocols, reports, regulatory submissions, and scientific publications.

Who you are:

We are looking for an individual who would be passionate about using their understanding of disease biology to make impactful contributions to discovering and developing medicines. Success in these responsibilities will require:

  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in Metabolism, Neuroscience, Endocrinology, Physiology or related disciplines. Minimum 3+ years of post-doctoral, fellowship, or industry experience required. Demonstrated expertise in basic and translational research focusing on obesity and associated conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, MASH, and neurodegenerative diseases.

  • High independence with the capacity to formulate hypotheses, guide lab scientists, develop analytical strategies, and interpret and present findings.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by publications, external presentations, or drug development reports.

  • Proven ability to lead R&D teams, foster internal collaborations, and establish external partnerships with academic institutions.

  • Extensive experience and in-depth technical knowledge of preclinical and clinical sample collection/processing, along with cellular and molecular lab techniques such as cell culture, primary cell isolation, immunostaining, molecular biology, ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, functional genomics, scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, genomic sequencing, qRT-PCR, and related analytical methods.

  • Preferred candidates will have prior biostatistics or bioinformatics experience (omics, pathway, network analysis, etc.) with programming skills in Python or R.

  • Must be able to collaborate across time zones, including with our Boston, South San Francisco, and Swiss sites.

Relocation benefits are available for this posting.
