EV Cell Development Engineer

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

GMs Battery, Propulsion & Sustainability (BPS) group is seeking an energetic, innovative, and team-oriented individual to join the Cell Development and Validation group. The candidate will ensure our EV battery cells delight our customers with built-in safety, reliability, and performance. In this role you will be building an understanding of the critical materials, features, and processes that go into industry-leading EV battery cells.

Learn and grow in these areas:

  • Li-ion cell & sub-component key design characteristics and manufacturing processes
  • Modeling and simulation necessary to create a digital twin of a battery cell to enable rapid development cycles
  • Direct physical testing to help establish/supplement the digital twin
  • Techniques to characterize the structural, thermal, and electro-chemical performance of the cell
  • Creating & delivering informative and persuasive, executive-level communications
  • Leveraging data to identify insights and drive objective decisions
  • Using team-based problem solving and creative solutions on evolving issues
  • Leading with influence and building relationships with people from Advanced Engineering, Program Teams, Virtual Engineering, Calibration, and Manufacturing
  • Strategic management of resources (people, hardware, analysis time)

What Youll Do

  • Champion the execution of comprehensive virtual and hardware-based Development, and Validation Plan
  • Quantify the performance of GMs cell portfolio, from advanced / ATW up to production
  • Assess, quantify, and convey program risks to leadership for informed decision-making
  • Develop DFMEAs/DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Modes) and improved detection methods to reduce high-risk failure modes
  • Prioritize workload and negotiate resources necessary to support activities
  • Develop new evaluation techniques to support the rapid evolution of GM battery and cell design
  • Mentor and further training opportunities for new and/or less-experienced colleagues

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Math, Computer Science, Information Technology, and/or Chemistry
  • Effective interpersonal skills when working with a team to solve complex problems
  • Proficiency with analytical thinking and data analysis techniques
  • Strong initiative, autonomy, and drive for timely problem solving
  • Ability to shape clear & concise presentations while tailoring content to the specific audience

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Li-ion cell design, virtual analysis, manufacturing, and testing methods
  • Experience in one or more of these areas: laboratory testing, validation, development, VMEC/controls, calibration, and/or design release
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data and to make sound recommendations
  • Experience with virtual modeling and simulation of mechanical, electrical, sealing, chemical, and/or combustion systems
  • A passion for engineering excellence and track record of seeking solutions to challenging problems
