DESCRIPTION

Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the UCSD School of Medicine with comprehensive clinical programs, extensive basic science and clinical research, and diverse educational opportunities for students, residents and fellows. The internationally renowned faculty play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as more than 300 professional, research and administrative staff who along with the department administrators interact closely with the faculty. The multi-disciplinary lab within the Department of Pediatrics explores the mechanisms role of microbes in and on the human body. Projects in the lab use microbial culture, animal models, and a variety of omics sequencing techniques to investigate fundamental mechanisms of microbiome-related diseases.

Under supervision, the Research Associate will assist with the generation of various omics data sets. The incumbent with also assist with bioinformatics and computational data analyses. These data sets will include metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metatranslatomics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of life science such as biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry including relevant laboratory techniques.

  • Skill in and knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of lab equipment.

  • Experience in maintaining well-organized lab and thorough records. Basic math skills and ability to handle accounting and billing practices.

  • Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills to communicate research results and carry out collaborative projects.

  • Ability to work under supervision on projects with a variety of personalities.

  • Good work habits, including ability to have at or near 100% attendance, reliability in research and in interactions with peers, supervisors, and subordinates.

  • Strong computer knowledge: Proficiency with Windows programs and knowledge of library usage with the willingness and ability to learn new hardware/software as required.

  • Experience in assisting with molecular experiments, such metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metatranslatomics.

  • Ability to use relevant computer software programs to organize and analyze data.

  • Skill and knowledge in maintaining cultures and strain collection.

  • Experience in generation of sequence libraries.

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing complex solutions, culture media and reagents.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
