Job Summary:

This position works within one of CooperSurgical's Laboratories, including the Genetics Lab, the California Cryobank Reproductive Tissue Recovery, the Cord Blood Registry (CBR), or the Stem Cell Processing Lab. You will execute an array of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to screen, process, and preserve various samples for future clinical use. This role is part of a dynamic laboratory system that primarily involves lab bench work and cryogenic procedures (applicable to California Cryobank, CBR, and Stem Cell Processing). You will collaborate with multiple cross-functional teams to achieve the best possible outcomes for the populations we serve.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Sample Processing and Preservation:
    • Execute SOPs to screen, process, and preserve semen, cord blood, and tissue samples.
    • Perform semen evaluations and prepare samples for intrauterine (IUI) and intracervical (ICI) insemination.
    • Conduct post-thaw sample analysis and prepare bodily fluids for transport to reference laboratories.
    • Process cord blood and cord tissue samples at all workstations trained and maintain certifications.
    • Perform cryogenic procedures, including liquid nitrogen storage-tank verifications and vial transfers.
  • Laboratory Maintenance and Operations:
    • Maintain and clean laboratory equipment, ensuring all quality control checks are conducted and recorded.
    • Perform routine laboratory procedures, including batching samples and setting up automated assays.
    • Register temperatures of freezers/fridges and maintain inventory of lab supplies.
    • Accession samples using a laboratory information management system and store samples post-analysis.
    • Perform daily department startup/shutdown checklist tasks and documentation.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Document and implement various procedures and protocols.
    • Maintain specimen and case logs, prepare assay worksheets, and clinical reports.
    • Comply with all regulatory, quality assurance, quality control, operating, and safety procedures to audit-ready standards.
    • Participate in the review of standard operating procedures and complete bi-annual and annual proficiency assessments.
    • Audit, verify, and maintain accurate records for each sample.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work with multiple cross-functional teams to achieve the best possible outcomes.
    • Communicate any errors, accidents, or incidents to management and record in associated logs.
    • Provide coverage for donor/patient-related tasks, ensuring privacy and professionalism.
    • Communicate deviations from procedures, anomalies, and abnormalities to responsible parties.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Perform additional duties or assignments as directed by management.
    • May perform phlebotomy if licensed.
    • Participate in department projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Education & Training:
    • Bachelor's degree in the sciences preferred.
    • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to understand and apply safety standards and good laboratory practices.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications.
    • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Frequent reaching, grasping, repetitive motions, and eye/hand coordination.
    • Ability to work in environmental conditions typical in office and/or laboratory environments.
    • Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
