  • Stony Brook University
  • Stony Brook, New York
  • Full Time

The Department of Pathology at Stony Brook University?s Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) is seeking clinical pathologist (M.D.) or clinical laboratory scientist (Ph.D.) to serve as Section Director of the Immunology/Serology. This position is at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor/Clinical Associate Professor (dependent upon qualifications and experience). This appointment carries responsibilities in clinical service, education, research and institutional service missions of the RSOM. The Section Director will provide administrative oversight for the Immunology/Serology and subsectional Lyme Disease laboratories within the Stony Brook University Hospital?s (SBUH) Department of Laboratories.

The successful candidate will join a strong and experienced clinical pathology faculty at Long Island?s leading academic medical center, with opportunities for collaborations in basic and translational science and teaching opportunities across the breadth of clinical pathology. Teaching responsibilities will include instruction of medical and dental students, clinical residents and fellows, and students enrolled in Stony Brook?s Health Sciences programs. Strong candidates should demonstrate the ability to lead a team of experienced technical professionals, and to expand and retain talented clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists?efforts supported by a recently revised organizational and salary structure. The Section Director must also stay current with emerging technologies (e.g., multiplex ELISA, automated serology and electrophoresis platforms, single-cell and flow cytometric-based methodologies), and participate in assay and service development in these areas that meet regulatory compliance in New York State. Clinical responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting immunology, serology and, potentially, flow cytometry test results, as well as providing consultative support to clinical teams. Experience in designing and validating clinical laboratory assays and testing services is another important distinguishing quality.

An additional opportunity exists for appropriately qualified candidates to provide oversight for the clinical flow cytometry section. These candidates will have experience in generating and interpreting flow cytometric phenotypes relevant to malignant and non-malignant cells, and in generating interpretations in reporting results for diagnostic purposes. As such, successful flow cytometry technical directors will also qualify for certification by New York state, which may require additional supervised training period to accumulate the necessary qualifying cases.

Abundant opportunities for scholarship exist in collaborations with established research groups in microbiology, immunology, and oncology at the RSOM. Intramural funds are available to support investigator-initiated projects designed to generate preliminary data needed for longer-term extramural support. Advancement in this position will also involve service as an active member for working groups and committees spanning the broad mission of an academic medical center at the institutional, New York state, and national professional organization levels.

Academic rank at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and academic record.
