**Scope of Position**
The responsibilities of this position will include supporting various R&D projects by designing and implementing new test procedures and characterization capabilities in the Chemical Durability laboratory, as well as carrying out and expanding established testing and characterization capabilities. The candidate will be involved in projects that require a fundamental understanding of glass corrosion, dissolution, etching, and glass surface engineering. This position requires a detailed understanding of glass surface science and chemical durability concepts with an extensive practical knowledge of experimental design and governing reactions. Other expectations for this role include supporting customer interactions, an ability to build an internal and external professional network, writing technical reports, and contributing to intellectual property.
**Day-to-Day Responsibilities**
+ Acts as a technical expert in the Chemical Durability area
+ Employs hands-on laboratory approach to solve fundamental problems and contribute to product development and process research
+ Designs, builds, and/or modifies laboratory equipment or processes to complete a desired task
+ Designs and executes experiments to solve problems or develop new processes or products
+ Provides technical guidance to technicians and scientists within the group
+ Uses rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build fundamental understanding
+ Document ideas and contributions in IDs, technical reports, and refereed publications
+ Identifies and articulates problems and develops and executes creative approaches to solving them
+ Provides day-to-day problem-solving support to Research, Development, and Manufacturing
+ Deliver technical presentations to customers, teams, and at seminars and conferences
+ Functions as a team member or team leader on focused projects
**Experiences/Education - Required**
+ Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field. Alternately, may possess M.S. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field with at least 5 years of experience.
+ Experience in interaction of materials with aqueous environments. Examples can include knowledge of surface-mediated reactions of glass, ceramics, or other related materials when subjected to aqueous conditions and/or humidity.
+ Analytical chemistry knowledge and experience with a variety of materials characterization equipment or techniques
+ Experimental design, set-up, execution, and data analysis
+ Technical writing and oral presentational skills
+ Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Origin software
**Experiences/Education - Desired**
+ Industrial research or post-doctoral experience preferred but not required
+ Background in engineering and characterization of materials surfaces
+ Knowledge of statistics for experimenters as well as statistical software like JMP or Minitab
+ Six-Sigma training/certification

The range for this position is $86,728.00 - $119,251.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
