Job Description

Perform routine and complex analytical procedures, recognize deviations, and provide interpretation following established standards and practices.

Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and comply with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.

Process biological specimens for analysis, evaluate, and solve problems related to specimen collection and processing.

Operate instruments and perform procedures within the scope of training.

Perform scheduled maintenance procedures and recognize equipment malfunctions, acting according to established protocols.

Perform, record, and maintain accurate quality control records; recognize out-of-control results and take appropriate actions.

Answer inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results; act as a liaison and foster effective communication between the laboratory and health care team while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Perform routine inquiry and data input on laboratory computer systems, ensuring accuracy of information and being responsible for corrective actions.

Utilize computer software to enhance specialty area.

Instruct new associates and students as required; assess competencies of other test performers based on experience and education.

Complete required continuing education units and mandatory in-services; maintain and upgrade personal professional development.

Provide guidance to co-workers in the absence of an on-site supervisor regarding staffing and technical issues that arise.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Master's or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours in biology, and 12 semester hours in chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.

Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS, or meet an alternate experience route for High Complexity Testing.

American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at the time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
