ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Obtains venous and capillary blood samples on correctly identified patients within Laboratory and FDIHB.
- Uses correct techniques in obtaining specimens including drawing from appropriate sources and correct tubes based on the age and ease with blood may be obtained.
- Keeps work area clean and abides by the Standard Precautions of FDIHB Hospital
- Transports/receives incoming outpatient specimens and directs them appropriately to departments
- Receives incoming reference laboratory results, separates and files reports according to policy
- Assumes responsibility for preparing cytology, surgical, and reference lab specimens for transport by the courier to the reference laboratory
- Utilizes the computer and manual methods to correctly identify, collect, and accession patient samples.
- Communicates basic instructions to patients in English and / or Navajo.
- Participates in inventory control of FDIHB Laboratory supplies, which are used for general laboratory testing supplies.
- Performs CLIA-waived testing within the FDIHB Laboratory, Hospital and Clinics.
- Understands the CLIA-waived test method being performed and adheres to the critical value reporting policy.
- Participates in mandatory in-services regarding Safety, OSHA, HIPAA and Infection Control, etc.
- Completes all required competency assessments and training by prescribed due dates.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patient, administrative, and laboratory data.
- Understands and adheres to established compliance, safety, and quality assurance standards.
- Receives all calls, patients, and FDIHB employees with a friendly manner and utilizes AIDET.
- Participates as an active member of the laboratory staff to improve the overall operation and efficiency of Laboratory.
- Evaluates requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable.
- Assists when needed to obtain specimens including drawing from appropriate sources and correct tubes based on the age and ease with blood may be obtained.
- Correctly identifies and prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
- Maintains knowledge and can perform correct preparation of specimen handling and storage requirements for transportation to outside testing laboratories to include preparing cytology, surgical specimens.
- Selects the procedure that is appropriate for the request for service and congruent with patient considerations.
- Prepares reagent and primary reference materials.
- Selects, performs evaluates, and monitors the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
- Obtains analytical data (e.g., color and points, digital read outs, tracings, patterns, agglutinations). Reports in approved units of measure.
- Understands appropriate clinical states in relation to test results and recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates, implements corrections and correlates data to verify results prior to release of patient results.
- Reports results to appropriate individuals by following hospital approved reporting policies and documents all appropriate information in patients Electronic Health Records
- Preforms quality control procedures on equipment using reagents, and products, and maintains proper records for review and corrective action reports.
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance on analyzers as scheduled and outlined in Maintenance Procedure Manual.
- Understands instrumentation error codes and addresses errors to maintain accurate test results.
- Understands and can analyze QC data regarding WestGard Rules, documents and address findings with the Medical Technologists or Technical Medical Laboratory Supervisors.
- Ensures daily department logs have been completed and any corrective action properly documented.
- Reviews patient reports for accuracy and correctness.
- Participates in the Laboratory CAP Proficiency Program and maintains required competent Level for compliance.
- Participates in Laboratory accreditation by maintaining laboratory documentation, knowledge and skill levels in relations to approved Laboratory procedures and policies as well as Hospital Policies.
- Completes all required competency assessments and training within prescribed due dates.
- Recognizes and communicates indicators of malfunction of instruments, tests and notifies Medical Technologists or Technical Medical Laboratory Supervisors. Documents all action outlined within the Laboratory Quality Assurance policies and procedures.
- Participates in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program by formally reporting Concerns or Errors as outlined in Laboratory Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures.
- Works with Medical Technologists or Technical Medical Laboratory Supervisors on the course of action to follow when values obtained from standard or control sample are unacceptable.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Three (3) months documented training in which the individual has performed high complexity testing or Completion of an Accredited Medical Laboratory Training Program.
Education: Associates Degree in Chemical, Biological or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
Must provide a copy of diploma and transcript upon hire to meet CLIA88 Standard (493.1489) qualification for High Complexity testing personnel
Education institute must be approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), the Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation (CAHEA), or other organization approved by HHS.
Candidates must be eligible for the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical lab scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
