Histology, Molecular Biology, and Protein Chemistry

Plan and conduct advanced research projects primarily involving histology of muscle tissues using light, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy. Perform recombinant DNA techniques including isolation and purification of plasmid DNA and genomic DNA, restriction enzymatic analysis of DNA, PCR, qPCR, bacterial transformations, agarose gel electrophoresis, and transformation; Protein Biochemistry including SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, and ELISA.

Cell Culture and Cellular Biology

Perform research experiments investigating the mechanisms of, and adaptation to, muscular dystrophy. Perform mammalian cell transfections, mammalian cell culture techniques, confocal microscopy, cell-based assays, and live cell imaging.

Physiological Assessments

Evaluation of cardiac and skeletal muscle function in rodents. Includes echocardiography and ex-vivo and in vivo muscle function testing in various skeletal muscles, accompanied by tissue preparation for histological and biochemical analysis, and analysis of acquired data. This requires good hand-eye coordination under a low-power dissection microscope and familiarity with computer-based data acquisition.

Animal Treatment and Experiment Preparation

Assist with rodent experiments by providing therapeutic treatments to research animals that are enrolled in ongoing studies. Treatments can include oral administration of non-viral treatments, tail vein injections of AAV, special diet administration, and more. Must be able to maintain detailed records of experimental data collected from multiple projects as well as updating an extensive mouse inventory. Other tasks will include preparing solutions used for physiologic experiments and miscellaneous tasks associated with the function of the laboratory.

Lab Safety and Regulatory Compliance

Maintain Gator TRACs with accurate online chemical inventory, annual hazard assessments, biohazard project registrations and personnel roster. Responsible for complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines. Maintain accurate records and legal documentation required by institutional policies such as biological, chemical,

and radiation safety policies. Maintain lab to meet all regulatory and safety guidelines to keep it in inspection ready conditions. Serve as lab representative for inspections. Understand supply orders to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of grant funding. Maintain lab supply inventory to ensure supplies are available. Research and evaluates new products, compares vendor prices. Monitor all lab equipment for proper function and maintenance.

Scientific Writing and Dissemination

Analyze data and assemble results for scientific publications, grants, and conference presentations. Assist in preparing data for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and other documents. Manage accurate and complete laboratory research records and prepare written reports of experimental results. Assist laboratory research with searches for and review of scientific literature relevant to the research focus of the laboratory. Participate in the development of new research and laboratory protocols.

Expected Salary:

$55,000 - $60,000 annually
