The Louisiana Department of Environmental Qualitys (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare.

Join the Air Permits Division, where Environmental Scientists play a key role in drafting the permitting actions that protect and maintain the air quality of the state. Were looking for self-starters who will use sound scientific judgment and attention to detail to review applications and correspondence from the manufacturing industry. In this position, you will work with a team of Air Permit Writers to build your own knowledge base and ensure permitting actions are correct and consistent with local, state and federal regulations. A bachelors degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field PLUS two years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing; OR A masters degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus one year of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing; OR A doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.   • Perform technical reviews of more complex air permit applications and other air quality-related correspondence in order to draft air permits for subsequent technical and management review.
  • Contribute to the professional development of lower level environmental scientist staff by providing guidance, training and oversight of work product in order to ensure that actions are correct and consistent in applying regulations and other requirements.
  • Review proposed industrial projects to determine applicable federal and state air quality regulations, evaluate eligibility of facilities or activities for coverage under general permits or regulatory permits, and assist with the development of new regulatory permits and general permits for minor sources.
  • Prepare, or assist in the preparation of, Basis for Decision and Public Comments Response Summary documents, obtain additional information from permit applicants as necessary and prepare enforcement referrals when potential violations of federal or state air quality regulations are identified.
  • Represent the department at meetings, conferences, and educational forums with the regulated community and attend training to update technical/professional development skills.

Appointment Type: This position is promotional for permanent DEQ employees only.

There is a Special Entrance Rate (SER) for this position, as follows:
Environmental Scientist 4: $27.41 per hour or $2,192.60 biweekly
